2 Antec PSU's Missing -5V Pins?

I am building a new setup using the MSI K7N2 Delta (NVIDIA nForce 2 ) motherboard and an Antec Sonota Case/Power Supply.

So far, the motherboard, processor, heat sink, RAM and power supply are installed in the case. Also, the power switch, reset switch, etc.

If I hook up the 20-Pin Power Connector only, the system as it is works great (the diagnostic LED's show CPU, RAM, and everything working. Freezes on Floppy Drive Check, as it should at this point).

However, If I plug in the 4-Pin Power Connector also, when I turn the system on the heatsink fans for half a second, the Diagnostic LED's flash for half a second, and that's it.

I hooked up my PSU tester and noticed that the test for the -5V on the 20 Pin failed. Looking at the 20-pin itself, it is entirely missing Pin 18 (the -5V pin and it?s corresponding white wire).

Reasoning a bad PSU, I bought another one. Antec 400W. I just opened the box and this one is missing the same pin also! I looked at an older Antec Sonata PSU which is running my current system and it has all 20 pins.

So, two bad PSU?s? Change in design? Any advice on how to get this system powered up?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Thanks for the info Galvanized 🙂

Curious, is there any way to use the new 2.2 revised specc'ed PSU's with motherboards expecting an older ATX version? This motherboard did run smooth with my older PSU w/the -5v rail. Or is the only solution to find an older PSU?

Thanks again for any help!

The -5 was dropped with revision 2.2 of the ATX spec in June of 2004/5 IIRC.

AFAIK, the -5 only severed ISA slots and some of the older PCI sound cards.

Only very old systems should need a -5. The -12 is soon to go.
