I recently bought an Acer netbook and the charger puts out 1.58 amps. The case I bought for it came with a car charger that puts out 2 amps. Not knowing much about electricity, with the 2 amp charger shorten the life of my battery or cause any problems?

It should be fine, but before you use it do one thing.
Get a meter and measure the voltage of the output on both adapters.
I have seen some adapters that use the load to regulate the output voltage. Meaning at 2A they output 20VDC but at 1.5A they output 23VDC. It is rare, but with something expensive buying a $10 volt meter would be worth it to make sure.

It should be fine. That current rating is the maximum that the charger can deliver. If the netbook only pulls 1.5 amps, then the charger will only deliver 1.5 amps.
