2.8c or 3.0c

Hi, I'm trying to decide on which CPU to go for.

Since the 2.4c, which I love and the 2.6 have already faded out, I'm deciding between the 2.8c and the 3.0c. Difference in price is $50 AUSD ($35 US) which isn't much considering the tax Aus has on computer parts. I'm slightly leaning towards the 3.0c as I've seen some people hit 3.75ghz on stock voltages and remain stable. Which should I go for?

I won't be using the same old Gigabyte MB which I currently have, thank god. It doesn't like it when I raising the FSB at all. I have Kingston HyperX PC3500 standing by and the Epox 4PCA3+ on its way. I went for this as I manage to find it at $100 cheaper than the ASUS P4C800. In fact it should arrive later this afternoon, all I need to do now is which CPU to go for. Please offer your opinion.

I'm also in need of optimal settings to run after I get all the parts and assemble everything. Settings running default voltages for OC is preferred but I won't know until I see wat kind of results I get on stock. Hope I'll get lucky and get a decent overclocker.

Thanks in advance :)

I'm australian too and you should of got an Athlon64 cause P4's suck.
Pentiums wont last as long and are slower then the Athlon64's in games even the P4 3.2 still gets blown away in any game by the Athlon64 3000+ just wait for 64bit games to come out and you will be crying because u got a 32bit CPU Unreal 2004 is 64bit and that comes out very soon with heaps more to follow.

And even if you get it overclocked to 3.4Ghz - 3.5Ghz it still gets smoked by the Athlon64 at 2.2Ghz 2.4Ghz thats because Ghz does jack and My 2500+ Athlon at 2Ghz will blow away your system in any game no matter how fast your CPU is when i put an NV40 in my box when they come out 2 months time.

Its the truth AMD Athlon64's are better in games then Pentium 4's everyone knows this. I'm a FAN of the best hardware out ....

If its AMD, Nvidia, Intel, ATI, SIS, VIA, the best is what i'm a fan of and at the moment AMD's got the best.
The sooner u can except that the sooner we can move on. Just giveing this guy the bad news now because in 8 months time after intel get out there 64bit CPU he will see how bad his purchase was.

Then start your OWN thread - don't HIJACK his. :p

I know it's difficult, but try to stay on-topic.
Topic: 2.8c or 3.0c

And I vote for the 3.0 which I would have got instead of my 2.8c if it were closer in price. Oc course I am NOT disappointed with my 2.8 which is happily o/c'd to 3.41Ghz at stock voltage and with stock HS.

I was originally planning to get an A-64 3000+ - however AMD's UNwillingness to match Intel's recently dropped prices made my decision for me. I figure ANY UPgrade is only gonna last me TWO years - AMD or Intel... BY THEN, 64bit will be more popular and I will review my decision.

ANYway, it will be FAR EASIER to sell your 3.0Ghz CPU in a couple of years (rather than your 2.8). ;)

Well, if you had bought a motherboard capable of high fsb speeds, I would say to buy the lowest speed P4C you can get, since higher fsb always outperforms lower fsb at or near the same speeds. Since you didn't I say definitely get the 3.0C, which seems to be a MUCH better overclocking chip than the 2.8C. And videoclone, with an NV40 in his system, your barely-overclocked XP 2500 wouldn't even compare to a non-overclocked P4 3.0C.

The fact is my cousin recently came to live with my family and he needs a computer. What's gonna happen is he will inherit my current Gigabyte motherboard, my spare 512mb stick of DDR266 and my 40GB IBM HD (very basic computer needs). I've decided to give them to him in return for his mobile phone :) Only thing I'm not keen on giving up is my current P4 2.4 but he's keen on a P4, so offered me a extra 160 on the side for the 2.4. I thought I might as well get a new C model and see their great OC ability.

That's that. videoclone stop being so persumptuous. It's not a spirit of the moment system overhaul, it's out of necessity. You might as well re-write your reply as: "mine's bigger!" I'm sure it is.

Lastly I've gone with the 3.0c as the extra amount was only half a week's pay. I'd like some pointers on overclocking.
