My Opteron 148 is stable at 2.8 with stock voltage on a Asrock 939 board. Idle about 32 C full load 50 C with stock cooler.

I can boot into windows at 3ghz and start prime but get errors after about 5 minutes. The temp goes to 51C.

I have limited overvolting options for the CPU for this board, but more concerned about heat. I am looking at coolers too, someone recommended the Scythe Ninja.

I am inclined to get a better cooler to see if I can lower temps anyway, even at stock and 2.8ghz.

I keep reading keep CPU less then 60 C. Thoughts on overvolting on Asrock 939?

32C idle to 50C load is a huge jump. I would definitley get a better cooler since you are overclocking. Maybe the Zalman 7000 series or the Thermaltake Big Typhoon. I would also try to stay below 1.5v for voltage. Just watch your temps as you try 3GHz. If you can't hit it, be happy with 2.8GHz. There's not too much of a difference between 2.8 and 3 and you probably won't notice the 200MHz at all.

Are you kidding me? I notice a performance difference between 2.9 and 2.95Ghz. :)

You can't be serious. :)

I didn't notice a real difference clocking my X2 3800+ from 2.0GHz to 2.5GHz. I just do it "because I can". ;)

Ahh dual core. Bah, I'd prefer higher MHZ on single core over dual core any day. At least until dual core over 2.8Ghz on air is possible for everyday usage at low vcore. :)
