yeah, well how about a 4400x2 with 2 7800gt's in SLI, would that be good and future proof? or would a 4000+ with 2 gt's be better?

well alot people i know that have got sli said its a waste of money for the performance difference its only small apparently

Man... read some benchmarks and reviews first, post second.

There are enough people even on this forum who have SLI rigs and are very happy with their performance. Yes, some games suck in terms of SLI support but in these cases, it usually doesn't matter anyway since FPS rates are enormous even with one card.

As for the original post, I recommend a dual core CPU (3800+ or 4400+ if you want to spend quite a bit of money on the extra cache) and OC it a bit. Way better for multitasking and multithreaded apps (which will take over the market since single core CPUs are slowly dying out) and essentially the same performance in current games compared to 4000+ single core.

For video cards, I don't recommend 7800 GTX. It's still quite pricy, not that much faster than a GT, and G71 is around the corner. My advice: wait for G71 or, if you can't wait, grab GT SLI.

Go with a single card - I would say a 7800GT would be enough, but get the GTX if you want.

Getting a single card means less power draw, less noise and similar performance. Plus, you can go SLI later, when cards are cheaper and games require more.
