I just got my Dell 4550 2.66ghz, 533 bus, 512MB ram, ATI Radeon 9700TX 128MB card, and I decided to test out my rig. I keep hearing just how fast this system should be, and I purchased Delta Force: Black Hawk Down just a couple of days ago. Fun game, but I have to admit my system seems to 'hickup' graphically sometimes.

I just downloaded 3Dmark03 Free Version, DirectX9, rebooted, and ran the test. The first game test runs really quick, averaging around 100FPS for most of it, sometimes much more, sometimes around 80FPS. It then goes to the next game test, and it plummets to 3 to 5 FPS. Total result was 1952 3Dmarks. What what what? I have my Direct3d settings 6X AA and 16X AF, but with details set to Performance. I just rebooted the computer, set AA and AF at 2X and details at High Performace, the first test ran the same and the second dropped again, but this time to around 7-10 FPS. Hardly a jump.

What is going on here? Immediately after setting up the system I went to ATI and downloaded the lastest drivers for my 9700. Beyond that, everything is stock. I assume I must have something set wrong here, but I am a novice with this new video card stuff and I could REALLY use any help. Thanks!

Forgot to add this, but here is a link to check my results. 3DMark results

I shouldn't. It is a brand new system that was installed with the 9700tx from the factory, so I doubt they would have installed nVidia drivers.

It is really odd that the first game test runs fluidly, but when the second (and remaining) game test comes on it looks like a slide show. I notice since posting that when running the demo the exact same thing happens, except now I have sound (which I do not have during any of my testing, not sure if I should or not).

Here is your problem:
"I have my Direct3d settings 6X AA and 16X AF" 3dmark2003 is pretty strenuous, a score of 4000 is pretty decent, and fsaa and aniso will kill your score. turn off those settings, and run the test again. also, make sure you dont have too many other proggies running in the background.

hope that helps,

Your score sounds about right for those settings. You should easily see in the 4000-5000 range with it all set to application preference (which is how everyone benches). 3DMark is supposed to be hard on the system - don't worry, it crawls on everyones.

Confirmed. Turn off your AA/AF and benchmark again.

I've never heard of a 9700TX before.
Maybe some chipset drivers would help it? I can't say for sure what it'll be; I know Dell only uses Intel processors, but I don't know if they are as loyal about chipsets - I've only owned one Dell ever, and it was a laptop.
