I am currently (finally) ditching very, very old (2) 75gb and 150gb platter (WD) drives. I am going to put in (2) 96gb SDD drives and a 1tb drive. I also just purchased a Corsair H50 cooler and am tempted to replace my current water cooling set up as well.

I am trying to figure out a few things, the first is the least intrusive, getting a 2.5 to 3.5" type tray.

My current tower uses this screws that act as guides that slip into rails in the HDD area.

Below is a picture of the tab that I slide up and then slide the HDD into the rails, once in place you just push the tab back down to make sure it doesn't slide back out.

With this in mind, if I just reuse the screws, shouldn't something like this work fine? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817997013

Next possible step, buying a new, smaller tower. I bought my current tower about 3 years ago from a friend, but have since upgraded the internals (mobo, cpu, gpu, ps etc) the only thing I am still using are wires were I needed and the installed water cooling system. (I have some variant of this tower - http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=554&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=138). To put it simply, it's the biggest desktop tower I've ever seen and doesn't even fit in the tower are of my desk. I had to take off the door and cut a hole in the back and the tower still over hangs the front and back!

My current mobo, CPU, GPU, and power supply.
The tower area of my desk is 19"x11"25" (LxWxH), current tower is 24.5"x8.5"x24". You can see plain as day just how huge the radiator is (lower left hand corner of the last pic), the pump is actually on top of my PS and the loop goes to the CPU, GPU, reservoir then radiator. I just bought the Corsair H50 because it was a steal at BB for $40. Current cooling system is Swifttech, but I'm unable to locate on their website the blocks etc. I'm fine having my gpu being air cooled, but if I am going to replace the cooling system I only want to when I put the PC into a new, smaller tower. I went through a hell of a time when I put together this current rig, trying to get everything to fit (granted I still have space, it's just IMO a cluster fuck of stuff going on with the giant radiator pump and the fact I found out the hard way the PS that came with the tower wasn't sufficient for the C2D I bought (needed another rail).

With all that said, can anyone recommend a tower that would fit in my desk and be practical? I'm not opposed to spending a few bills on a new tower, but I don't need anything special, but other then size I would like to make it quieter if possible. I only have 4 fans, two on either side of the radiator, PS fan and another case fan on the back end, but the damn thing seems really, really loud, but I think thats due to more of the pump then the fans as the case has some thin foam backing on the side panels to help with sound damping.

(And YES, that is a freaking floppy drive that actually works... Its only still there because I don't have a cover to replace it if I took it out)

that drive adapter will work fine. duct tape also works fine. that's what i use.

antec 300 and the cm690 are good inexpensive cases. you might want to look into those.

Sweet thanks, didn't realize they made it so you can stack two SSD's into one! I'll see if any place local carries anything like this so I don't have to wait for shipping otherwise I'll order tonight.

Could anyone offer input or advise on a case, specifically targeted at reducing sound?

i've got a p183. for its size it's difficult to work in due to the presence of a horizontal divider. the p280 fixes that by removing the divider. i'm not sure the divider actually accomplishes much (it's supposed to keep the hot PSU and hard drives from warming the air the CPU uses). and if it does accomplish something, you could just make one from cardboard.

whether the special case panels actually quiet anything or not is up in the air. the computer is fairly quiet with the panel off. it's not enough insulation to prevent my 4870's fan being noticeable.

the blowhole is pointless. i'd rather have a second 120 fan in the back.

i think the actual trick to silence is very quiet fans. and lots of them.

Hmm thanks for the input, I'll do some research on fans, I do think the rear one in my tower is probably the culprit to most of the sound.

I don't even use an adapter. I just rest my SSD on a flat spot in my case. I think it's resting on some of the extra PSU cables. I don't really care about aesthetics though, and my case doesn't have a window or anything like that, either. This is in an Antec P180, Kingston 96GB SSD.

Thats how my drives are now, they are literally just resting on some cables and some tubing for the cooler. But the OCD in me demands they are rigidly mounted to something. The adapters arrive tomorrow.
