I'm planning on using 2.5" HDs to backup photos and videos. I'm using the 2.5" because I will be transporting about three of them from work to home and back about one a month and they're easier to store. Are there any problems or disadvantages to using one of theose 2.5"/3.5" docks for this or is it better to place it in an enclose? Is there anything made to just store a bare 2.5" drive? Looking for a padded plastic case or something like that.

there is no problem using a dock... you can actually just use an eSATA data cable and eSATA power cable if you are cheap, like me... just do NOT EVER place the drives exposed electronics on an open metal case, it can short out (which looks pretty awesome, smells pretty bad, and sadly, ruins your drive). An advantage of SSD drives is that they do not have exposed electronics, while spindle drives have a printed circuit board on the bottom, exposed to damage (and static electricity from your hands, which can also ruin it).

my only concern is wearing out on the contacts of the dick if you plan to swap excessively.
