2.4GHz P4 equivalent

My mom's HP laptop may be replaced under Circuit City warranty when I take it in. Right now she's got a 2.4GHz P4 in it. I was wondering what the equivalents would be in Pentium M, and AMD A64 and Turion flavors should a P4 based laptop not be available.

Well, considering that a 2.4Ghz P4 is quite old, and is most likely a Northwood A with slow memory, I'd say any Pentium M, Turion, or Sempron available will outperform it.(make sure you get a socket 754 sempron if you're going that way though)

Any speed for those three CPU families will wreck a 2.4ghz Pentium 4. Hell, a 2.4ghz Pentium-M will blow just about anything away, hehe.

The best buy from those families, in my opinion anyway, is the 1.73ghz Pentium M. It's roughly the equivalent of a 3200+ Athlon64 or Turion, though the Pentium-M's main strength is gaming (it's a bloody monster) which benefits the most from the actual CPU architecture as opposed to memory bandwidth and latency (one area where the P-M is lacking). Other stuff will run fine, but don't expect it to scream along like it will on a decent Athlon64. So I guess I take that back, get a Turion64 🙂

P-M equivalent: 1.1-1.4 depending on the app.
A64/Turion (theyre close enough): 1.2-1.4

Basically, anything on the market will destroy that 2.4 GHz P4, not to mention run alot cooler.
