2.4C P4 setup

I was thinking about trying my luck at building a 2.4C pentium to replace my aging 1600@2200 AGOIA and to go with a new vid card.
Of course I am going to overclock. I was wondering if there is a specific stepping or revision that I should look for aside from the fact that it is an 800 mhz fsb processor.

Also, what are typical results for the 2.4C. I looked on VR-Zone and of course I saw all of those outrageous 4-5ghz overclocks by omega and friends, but for typical use (not 2.15 vcore) I was wondering what I can get. I decided I would pair it with an Alpha PAL8942 and a Sunon 80x25 50cfm fan from SVC (any comments about this cooler and whether I should take the 900U over it?). I prefer a copper base and aluminum heatsink.

As far as memory is concerned I was looking at 2 sticks of 512 3700 2 6-2-2 DDR for a couple bucks under 200. (Why would anyone buy 2x256 3700 for 170 when they can have 2x512 for 200 :) ).

Now here is where I need the most help, picking out a motherboard. I have done plenty of overclocking with AMD's, and I know what boards to go with, but what about P4's? I was on newegg looking through posts, and I was thinking about an Abit IC7. The only thing is, I really do not like Abit (I got 3 bad boards from them in a row with RMA's). What do you guys recommend for a motherboard? (I thinking about the P4P800 Deluxe and Abit IS7, also)

Can you change multipliers on P4 chips? Would it really matter if I put the DDR to 240MHZ and ran it 1:1 as opposed to running 240 5:4. Obviously the cpu clock and system bus would be much higher, but P4's eat up memory bandwidth, don't they? How much of a performance increase between a 240 1:1 and a 5:4 would there actually be. This is simply going to be my new gaming rig that will be paired with an overclocked 5900FX. I will not be doing any MPEG editing or whatever. I guess I will get the Abit IS7-E, I just do not feel like buying from Abit again (tech support and RMA have been horrible for me). I really do not feel like paying the extra 40$ for the p4p800, though.

I do not want to go much over the stock voltage and I have seen people getting a 2.4 to 3000 with stock voltage. If there is no real difference between a 240 1:1 and a 240 5:4 I might as well do 1:1 and not push the CPU up too high so that I can keep the vcore down.

I am going to buy another Sparkle FSP-350 (rated to 454w - I love sparkle). Will that do for an intel system (typical stuff - burner, dvd, hdd, floppy, etc)?

Hope I did not miss anything.

Thanks

Out of curiosity, do intel chipsets have PCI locks or dividers? I am reading the IS7 and P4P800 manuals and i read something about getting the pci bus out of spec.

i just got a ic7

it has an agp/pci lock

just remember though that you can't use PAT or GA with the 865 chipsets if you are running 5:4 or 3:2 but only with 1:1

but with the 875 you can with any ratio

There does not seem to be a particular chip that has been crowned king. There seems to be more L3XX Malay but there is also quite a few 3XX Costa Rica in the 3.3-3.5 range on air cooling. Most are getting in the 3.2-3.4 range with 1.525-1.600vcore.

The 1:1 mem ratio is good for most 2.8C chips and above. You will get better overall performance on a 2.4C with a higher fsb and 5:4 mem ratio. (ie: 275fsb=3.3Ghz @ DDR440 vs. 220fsb=2.6Ghz @ DDR440)

Nice light weight heatsink. My 7000CU all copper adds another 230 to the ALCU's 445. ;)

That Sandra Mem bench is using un-buffered, right?

I thought the copper one weighs 773 grams? Your's weights ~675 grams? Chop off a few of the wings?

In response to GtPrOjEcTX,

Dude, you do have a pretty good setup. I gotta say you could really use another stick of RAM to do Dual Channel though. Other than that looks good. My two sticks of Corsair 3200XMS 512MB (1024MB total)@DDR400, push 4932/4927 in Sandra memory test. I am doing some overclocking today. My chip so far from 2.66Ghz, will only do 3.2 stable though. Too bad for me, but it is an "ES" after all... Can't complain too much... Gonna overclock my memory and see if I can get any more out of her. I will post my results in a little bit...

huh?
It looked like your Mem scores were low. So I thought that you had Mem bench set to run un-buffered instead of buffered in Sandra.

Just noticed that you are only running 1 stick of ram. Add another stick and run DC for about twice the bandwidth and that rig will smoke.

In response to Mickey21 and jhites regarding putting another stick of ram in it for dual channel. I'll do it sometime, I just don't have the $$ to invest in another stick of Corsair XMS PC3500 at the current time.

By the way, I just modded my powersupply...cut off most off one of the panels and drilled a few holes for screws. I think it turned out rather nicely...Pics (3rd post)
