Ok.....this has been bugging me for a few weeks now........

I know there are people here who are getting 3.2gig, 3.3gig, 3.4gig, 3.5gig etc... on their 2.4 C1's...... *BUT* .... these results are NOT the norm ...... these are *THE CUTTING EDGE HARDCORE OVERCLOCKERS* not "REAL-WORLD" overclockers.

What follows is what I believe is a REALISTIC, REAL-WORLD analysis of what the average joe-shmo real-world overclocker can expect from a C1 2.4.

My criteria is a folows:-

-> CPU Voltage range of between 1.525v <-> 1.60v -> over 1.60v starts straying into possible SNDS(sudden northwood death syndrome) territory, not to mention significant heat increases

-> FSB results of 181mhz or higher have been excluded due to their "extremeness" and "rarity" - ie: they are statistical [ overclocking ] anomilies - put another way, we all know that there are some exceptional CPU's out there that will do 3.4gig at 1.525v, but these are *VERY* rare

-> results are ONLY for C1 CPU's -> SL6DV, SL6EF & SL6RZ

-> data has been extracted from the overclockers.com database

So..........to the results...............

Using the above (4) criteria, there are (31) CPU's that meet this criteria. For these (31) cpu's the average overclock is 2.985gig @ average CPU Voltage of 1.56V.

Broken down further, we can see that:-

=> (12) are Malaysian at an average O/C of 3.058gig @ average CPU Voltage of 1.554V

=> (5) are Phillipines at an average O/C of 2.957gig @ average CPU Voltage of 1.584V

=> (14) are Costa Rican at an average O/C of 2.931gig @ average CPU Voltage of 1.555V

****Conclusion****

For the average "Joe-shmo" overclocker, I believe it is accurate to say that they can expect thier shiny new 2.4 C1 to hit 3gig [ +/- %2 ] at an average CPU Voltage of 1.55V [ +/- %2 ] .

So if you are wondering what you are doing "wrong" that your 2.4 C1 wont go over 3gig at close to stock voltage, the short answer is that in "non-hardcore" overclocking circumstances, 3 gig is what you should expect at close to stock voltage - you are doing NOTHING wrong.

I agree that with the older C1 chips we did not see near the huge overclock capabilities that we do with the newer mvid chips. These new chips for the most part, are easily hitting 3.0-3.2 at STOCK vcore. My 2.53 is sitting at home now doing 3.43 at 1.5vcore. Many others have had the same experience. So though I agree that there are those who seem to have a "magic" touch with overclocking. I believe the average "Joe Shmoe" can order a mvid chips and happily be at 3.0-3.2 on stock everything.

I am not too impressed with the CPU database.
I have a 1.6 Williamette P4 that can run 2.3GHz stabily.
According to the database, I have the fastest one by a large margin

.
But it is now clocked down to 2.13GHz for thermal temps
that are rising from spring weather.

I agree that database is very inaccurate at best. You should definately take that info with a grain of salt. Overclocking is 10% knowledge, and 90% luck IMHO.

Tillo ~ ya know.....

if there was a thread here that keeps those types of stats up to date, it would be invaluable :D

definate sticky potential ;)

if you have the knowledge ~ you make your own luck ;)
I think it is more like if you buy enough chips, you will eventually get a good one. Once you do, then there is some skill to overclock it. If you get a dud, its a dud. No amount of knowledge can overcome that. As you well know, luck has an awful lot to do with it.

how true~

i went thru 3 duds til i got a 3.2ghz 2.4b
it only took 1 2.53 from outpost to get 3.4ghz cause i jumped right on it the day Technonut posted his results ;)
thx Technonut! :D

i dont even wanna bring up the 2.26b fiasco

my point is ~ that when one us posts a killer chip, get one immediately cause thats your best shot if you only have 1 shot ;) :) :D

It is really sweet when there is a place/batch/stepping of chips are guaranteed stellar overclockers! That is not normally the case. Usually, you do your homework, buy your chip and hope for the best. You may get a good one, you may get a dud. That is where luck of the draw comes in. Duvie got a killer 2.4 SL6EF from Newegg, NFS4 got a B1 stepping that is....well..not a killer chip from the same vendor rifgt around the same time. I bought mine used from a good member here that I knew was a good chip. I bought one from another member here that was a real POS. I was lucky to get rid of it.

Yeah, I bought my 2.4 about a week before the Outpost 2.53 news broke. I was thinking of it, but the 2.4 I have is petty decent @ 3.06. I can live with it.

Same here, luckily sold my 2.4, but at a 'discounted' price.
