WASHINGTON - President Bush sent Congress a $2.4 trillion election-year budget on Monday featuring big increases for defense and homeland security but also a record $521 billion deficit.

To battle the soaring deficits, Bush proposed squeezing scores of government programs and sought outright spending cuts in seven of 15 Cabinet-level agencies. The Agriculture Department and the Environmental Protection Agency were targeted for the biggest reductions.

I left Agriculture because of the waste and mentality in that place...the 'Farm Bill' still makes me sick to my stomach. I am sure, given the political fallout of touching the proverbial third-rail, that Bush will neither make substantial cuts in Agriculture to an acceptable level, nor will such much-welcomed cuts be championed through Congress...

Damn! The deficit is already up to $512 billion? Last time I checked it was $477 billion. When will it end? The EPA and Agriculture department are SMALL fish. Why doesn't Bush propose to cut some of the damn BLOAT in Social Security? Oh yeah, nevermind there are so many old people that would be political suicide. Someone needs to write a song about how the old people are robbing us blind and put it on MTV.

He's cutting from 63 other programs as well.

Well that's a start but like I said, he's not going after the BIG fish which are social security and medicare. Not to mention the huge drug bill that was passed which was basically a big blank check to the drug companies and a huge debit to the pocket books of younger generations for years to come.

not really....stupid posts beget stupid replies.

How was it stupid? My point is young people are completely clueless about the implications of this deficit and the huge amounts of money they will be paying to older people. Like I said, maybe if some pop star wrote a song about it and put a music video of that song on MTV young people would start to get a freaking clue about what's going on.

borrow and spend Republicans are at it again. I like how people in other threads want to blame the Democrats in the Senate for not filibustering spending bills.

STOP us before we spend again.
a pox on both parties.
I have said it before, both parties want to spend your money. They are just debating what they want to spend it on.

oh, now I see what you are saying; let's work out the kinks on our Elderly song:

[starts John Lennon Music-Imagine]

Imagine there are no grandparents,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the old people
no longer "robbing us blindddddddd"...yoooouuuuhooooooouuuuuu

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will be only young.

Imagine there's no medicad
Its easy if you try
No prescription drug benefit
Now maby they'll all die

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im sick of them getting a free ride,
I hope some day you'll join us,
and stop these f*cks from robbing us blind.

This part is especially interesting:

Bush?s budget projects a record budget deficit of $521 billion this year but says it can be cut to $364 billion in 2005. However, the 2005 deficit figure does not include the ongoing costs of fighting the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hmmmm, how much will that tab be when it comes due? $50 Billion? $100 Bil?

No wartime request until after elections
White House budget director Joshua Bolten told reporters that the administration will not make a request for a wartime supplemental for 2005 until after the November elections. He said $50 billion would probably be the ?upper limit? of what would be needed in 2005. If that level is reached, it would mean Bush?s $364 billion deficit target would rise to $414 billion.

Nice strategy there Mr. Rove...

Lol, not bad for on the spot ;). My problem is not in being helfpul to people in need. My problem is that the boomers have turned out to be the entitlement generation, and that just doesn't cut it. Safety nets = fine. Entitlements = fuxor off and leave my money alone. Restructure SS and medicaid back to safety net status.

As for drug prices/medical treatment, that's something I'm back and forth on. I'm a big believer in market driven competition. However, when it comes to life saving meds or procedures, any price is acceptable to those who need them. Wouldn't you sell everything you own to save the life of your child, or your own life? It's a neverending seller's market, because competition is reduced to practically nothing.

Exactly. Social Security is not a safety net. Any old person who has worked at all in their life gets it and it doesn't matter if they are a billionaire or what. What really burns me up is watching all these old people in the damn Bingo halls and casinos blowing their SS checks because their bored @sses don't have anything else to do.

Also, guess what age group happens to be the wealthiest? You guessed it, old people. So, basically young people are now paying to "support" the wealthiest age group in the country.

but those same old people paid into the system their whole life to support the previous generation. the problem with SS is not greed, it's numbers. the pyramid is losing it's base and there is no easy fix.

The problem is that people moved away from personal responsibility in the past, and didn't think about its ramifications. Sometimes correcting mistakes can be painful, but has to be done. Why not propose a phase out? In 10 years, SS dies. That way, people can make some plans to mitigate the impact. If you lose what you've payed in, just count it as another tax and move on.

Yeah, they paid in their whole life but the problem is that a lot of them are sucking out MORE then they ever paid in. Social Security is supported by tax dollars from the national budget every year.

Experts say that an 18 year old entering the work force today is doomed. They will pay huge sums of money into SS and only get out a fraction of it once they retire.

Huh.

SS doesn't have anything to do with the current deficits- it pays for itself and puts a surplus in the treasury. ~$1.2 T of the total federal debt is money borrowed from SS to finance other govt spending. SS is projected to begin needing that money back ~2015, when projected inflows become less than the projected outflows, and should be able to maintain itself on that basis until ~2040.

So, uhh, lay off the uber-right misidentification of the problem, find the facts here-

http://www.ssa.gov/

The repub bait and switch on the senior drug plan doesn't even enter into it- that won't start until 2006, if ever. Plenty of time to rip the guts out of that, after all those seniors vote republican in 2004...

Want to know where the deficits come from, for real? They come from taxcuts, particularly for those who need them the least, and from spending on the military and so-called security- pay attention to table 6-

http://www.cbpp.org/12-16-03bud.htm

It seems to be very fashionable among the rabid right to trash SS, blame it for everything from moral decay to international terrorism. Look a little deeper for the causes of the current deficits, like in your own anti-tax feed the rich rhetoric and knee jerk ineffective spending to counter nonexitent threats.

From Amok-

"Why not propose a phase out? In 10 years, SS dies. That way, people can make some plans to mitigate the impact. If you lose what you've payed in, just count it as another tax and move on."

And just what are the current 65 year-olds living on SS now supposed to do to to, uhh, "mitigate the impact"? Save up for a handgun so they can blow their brains out?
