Hey all, was in the market for a new cpu.. upgrading from an old pentium 4 2.26 ghz machine...

Now would it be wiser to go with a 3500+ with the recent price drops or just stick with the newcastle 3400+?

I am one to upgrade my motherboard usually with my processers, is there any reason to take the new socket over the old socket? the higher chips are out of my spending limit...

Thanks

s939 doesn't require registered memory, so it benches better. The newcastle seems to bench better than the clawhammer too.

the nice thing about the new socket 939 is that you can use both the FX and A64 chips in them...

they also have dual channel and... yeah..

as for socket 754... the nice thing is that the A64 up to 3700+ still has 1 meg of L2 while on the skt 939, they are all 512 kb L2 unless you get an FX chip...

if you go tthe money, get the 3500+ or else stick with the newcastle 3400+ or clawhammer 3400+ at that

I thought only the old FX chips required registered ram, so if i went with the 3400+ i would need registered ram?

the old FX's are socket 940 which is totally different than the A64 socket 754's which use non-ECC memory

Would the 2.2 ghz 3500+ and dual channel ram be that much better then a faster 2.4 ghz 3400+???

they are both the same price and i want a gaming machine :)... wouldnt the faster old socket be better?

it's hard to say...

dual channel don't help a64 as much as p4's... so...

it's a 2.4 ghz processor with 512 kb L2 cache single channel vs a 2.2 ghz processor with 512 kb L2 cache dual channel...

i'd think the 2.4 would win but i have no idea...

anyone shed light on this?

^ I ditched the cpu and went with a 2.2 GHZ 3200+ so i could pick up some Logitech Z680 5.1 Speakers

When AT first benched the 939 chips, they found that the 3500 and 3400 were about the same speed. When the 3500's were $100 more than the 3400's, it didn't make much sense to go with them. However, now that the prices have come down, the 3500's are much more reasonable, and I'd say going 939 now is a good choice since it will give you a great opportunity for upgrading later on down the road.

However, the 3200+ is also a great choice, and you can still upgrade to a 3700+ eventually.

Congrats and have fun!

And Yanagi is correct about the HT speed.
