Well, pity that people here in the UK pay an even higher £618.04, not the £526 your using...gotta add the VAT @17.5%. Sure VAT registered people can claim the extra back, but its the price everyone purcxhases at and what normal peeps gotta pay. You also cant use the exchange rate to estimate US vs UK prices like that, sicne we british folk get the joy of paying extra on rather a lot of things, particularly in the comp world...for example, see that XBOX ya'll just bought...we'll be paying the same figure...except in £ not $. Economies of scale, shipping (hey, arent they actually made closer to us than you's ??), and such...ya know how it is😉......based on previous trends for cpu pricing, id have to peg our £618 figure as being roughly equal to a $700 US price.

Here's the Dabs (great company, for those that dont use them or know who they are) part data for the cpu in question BTW:

Pentium 4 2.2GHz S478 Box 512KB
Mfr code: BX80532PC2200D
Quicklinx: 1565WS
Long Lead Time Expected

£526.00 £618.04

I can see it already... Dell's xxxx series... 2.2GHz Northwood with 256MB PC133 on i845, a 20GB drive, a TNT2 m64 ...

I doubt Dell will be using any system equiped with PC133 memory unless they have excess i845 boards that only work with PC133. Otherwise, they'll use the DDR i845 boards. Also, most OEMs (like Gateway, Dell, etc.) have upgrading their video card subsystems to GeForce 2 MX cards or equivilent. So that's a step forward.

For the first time in a long time, the average Dell/Gateway Joe Blow system will actually be a very admirable performer. Most OEMs will very likely have i845-D + 1.7GHz-2.2GHz P4 + 256 MB DDR + GeForce 2 MX/Ti. That's a very good system. Of course, they'll be paying a good $300 more than they would have to pay if they simply built one instead, but that's always the case, so this is a good sign for the average know-nothing consumer, because whatever he gets, it'll be close to the fastest available setup on the market (except for the video card of course, the standard is "just" a GeF2MX right now).

emachines is the m64 people, and hp, and crapaq. dell hasn't offered a tnt anything in years.

$765 is too much. thats a worse price/performance ratio than the 2 GHz. you would think that as you move up the line price/performance would go up so that people are encouraged to buy higher margin products.

No, the Dell 4200 series ships with a p4/sdram

Fortunately, i dont think the 4200 series is gonna offer speeds as high as 2.2 ghz.

Of course, but that's NOW. The 4200 series are the PC133 i845 boards that are the only type of i845 boards available.

Wait a month and every major OEM will be carrying a lot of i845-D powered desktops. I'm guessing that by spring, all of them will have converted to i845-D (with RDRAM at the high-end range).

I would tend to agree that the majority will transition to the I845-D as the production of such boards becomes more prolific, but in the short term it wouldnt be too much of a surprise to see a fw 2.2Ghz NorthWood's paired with SDRAM. And even in a nother half year or so I wouldnt be surprised if a few stragglers in the very low end stuck with SDRAM as well.

<< No, the Dell 4200 series ships with a p4/sdram. >>

I think that the 8200 series (RDRAM) is socket 478 based

might explain why they changed the number on the desktop from 8000, wouldnt' it?

dell probably won't have sdr p4s for sale a short period of time after i845D launch. i'm guessing they pump the system number to 4300 or whatever that day, and discontinue the 4200 within a week, if even that amount of time.

sucks to be the guy with that last 4200. who else wants to bet it ends up at dell outlet real quick?

Why would anyone pay that much for a CPU? I guess if you are super rich or are a large company it would make sense. But even then, you could get a Pocket PC 2002 or a full Athlon XP system for that price.

<< Is it possible that the ridiculous price is only because they're offering it before anyone else? Just a thought >>

Yes its possible, (AFAIK its not officially released) keep in mind also that introductionary prices for new top of the line cpu's are useally rather high. Give it a few weeks and probably we will see a better price and/or wait for the 2.4 version (should be out shortly after 2.2) and then the price for the 2.2 should be lower.

This is how its been in the recent past anyway.

<< I paid over $800 for my P2-450 when it first came out. While ~$750 is expensive, I plan on getting a 2.2GHz+ P4 with RDRAM. I'm hoping it will settle closer to $600-$650 once they become more widely available, but I won't not get one just because it would raise the total price of a system a few hundred dollars. >>

I paid $200 Canadian for a Celeron 300a which overclocked to 450mhz, a month before the P2-450 was even released. It performed equally in almost everyway. I sold this chip to my parents, and it still running perfect.

Just found this link The 2.2GHz Pentium 4s will be offered initially at a premium price, but at the end of January Intel is expected to re-adjust the prices of its processors, as first reported here.

Holy crap!! I didn't think they'd be that expensive. Oh well, they sound nice, too bad i'll never get to try one out until they are outdated and then there will be something else i'm dreaming about in the processor world i'm sure.:disgust:
