Actually this isn't hot at all if you want just a microdrive. You can get the 4 gig CF microdrive for only $200 by buying a creative muvo2 mp3 player (amazon has them and other places as well) and then taking the drive out.

This all started a few months back from a ebay seller who faked some pics so other ppl wouldn't order and he would get all the business. His pics showed some whack solder job on the microdrive.

The reality is apparently that the new drives are internally modified. I found this link, it goes to creative labs page that has a new specification that says: "The hard drive in this player will not work in Compact Flash devices." As well they have changed the packaging, it now has that printed on it. But this is the best evidence I've seen so far that something is up. I've seen a couple posts on another webpage claiming that the new style wouldn't format correctly in a card reader, but I've seen posts like that with the old style. http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=3&subcategory=20&product=8980&nav=technicalSpecifications
I've seen more posts and stuff. Apparently the new incompatible drives have 44C on them instead of 43B from the older ones (this is printed on the 4 gig drive itself). The new packaging also doesn't come with a carrying case, so thats one way to verify.
While I remain not 100% convinced its starting to look like YMMV. If you can find this drive at a local B&M in the old packaging it probably would be worth your while to grab it while you can. Since the 4 gig microdrive is around $400 by itself elsewhere, I think if you are in the market for a microdrive this is a good time to find an old style package while you still can.
As well, I think in the next few months the price on ebay for the old style drives/CF cards will be going up. :)
Another rumor says that all they did was put a invalid partition on it so that it can't be read in other devices. If thats true it may be possible to remove the invalid partition and fix it. I guess we will just have to wait for details on everything.
Here are some photos of the new packaging. Scroll them to see where it says card does not work in CF devices.

If anyone finds additional proof or links post them here please.

As I said, shop at a B&M store to make sure. I could order from online and get old packaging then next person might not. Just depends what they have in stock and what they grab.
As for if you mean PICTURES, the old packaging is in more of a oval tube. I think creative site had some pics of it. I know you can find a bunch on ebay from ppl who are selling them.
