I bought a 1800+ Athlon XP cpu from clmmods. I bought it because it would not post. He says he didn't do anything to the chip except put on a different HSF and that did not crack/burn out the core. So I bought it for $20. Upon inpection today, I noticed that the L1 bridges were filled in will this orange goop that was hard. I tried using 99% alcohol but it isn't getting to the tiny gaps. What will remove the gunk from the L1 gaps, please!!!!!!!!

Edit: I have now found out that the L9 gaps are filled in with this dark pencil looking stuff.
Edit:2 Rest in Peace little CPU, I dont know how you died but you were an interesting fellow, I wish I would have saved you buddy!!

Do I soak a cotton swab and swab the bridges or what? Give me instructions on how to clean the L1 and L9 gaps please.

So If I get a glass and fill it with alcohol, I can safely soak the CPU in there overnight? The alcohol wont evaporate too fast wont it.

Ok, nourdmrolNMT1, I did wht you said I am now soaking the XP 1800+ in 99% alcohol. I will take a look next morning and with a new toothbrush, gently brush the L1&9 gaps. I am hoping this will clean them out enough so it posts Wednesday night. ;) PS, there are no burn marks, nor is the core look chiped in any way. I hope undoing this overclock will fix the CPU. Or else I'll RMA it.

Maybe try acetone. I don't think it'll harm the core, packaging, or the pins. Use at your own risk.

Just cover it and it won't evaporate.

carb cleaner is way better then alcohol for this problem...........you want to get out any thing in small cracks that you cant rub....carb cleaner will disolve (hopefully) anything there........and the spraying force will help remove it......

Well I tried cleaning out the gaps with a pin. I'm pretty sure I got rid of 90% of the "gunk" clmmods put in there. Well I applied AS3 and boot up. No worky. :(:(:(. I'm totally bummed, whatever clmmods did sure did kill this precious 1800+, :(, well might as well give up and put the good ole Duron 1.2Ghz chip in. You will someday be mine AMD XP!!!!!! :}
