2 100mb nics connected by a crossover cat5 cable...one comp is running win2k and one is running winxp what can I expect for transfer speed? I need to transfer data from old computer to new computer....is this a good method?

The same, roughly, as you would expect if you were using a switch or you were using a 6 foot X-over. Those factors aren't all that relevant unless your X-over is poorly made. Like if you made it yourself. Not to say you can't make cables but most throughput problems with LAN's with homemade Cat5 cables, straigh thru or X-over, is the cabling itself. Realworld depends on alot of variables but generally speaking, you would see in the 60-80 Mb/s range.

That's probably the best method for transfering data from an old computer to a new computer. You might want to make sure both NICs are in 100Mbs Full Duplex mode to give you the best transfer speeds.

IME, 60-80Mbps is high for MS' implementation of SMB. If you're doing file transfers using SMB, expect in the 30Mbps range. If you're doing them using FTP, then you can expect around 60Mbps, though its tough to get much higher with any reliability (again, in my experience).
