2.1 speakers for under $100

So my trusty old ACS295s are finally dying out on me. Problem is, I can't find anywhere is
this godforsaken town where I can test a reasonable number of speakers, especially 2.1
systems.

I don't play many games. I mostly just listen to music and play the occasional DVD. I'd like
something cheap that justifies replacing the 295s (which cost me 40 dollars). I'm willing to
spend up to 100 dollers, but I'd like to stay in the 60-80 range. I'm also planning on mounting
these on a shelf that's about 2 feet above my desktop (so right over my head), and they're
not going to be in any symmetrical position, if that makes any difference.

Has anyone had any good experiences with speakers lately? I'm not an audiophile and my
speaker knowledge is pretty much nil. What do you think of the Cambrdige Soundworks
Digital (which is getting harder to find these days)?

Well I have the Altec Lansing ATP3 speakers and you can get them for like around $60 nowadays and they really are a good set for the money. They have really crisp highs, pretty good midranges (though that depends upon the surface you set them on, because of the bottem-firing midrange drivers) and the sub hits well until ya get to really high levels where the speakers start to clip. I did get to compare them to a set of Cambridge Soundworks speakers and while the sub seemed a little beefer on the Soundworks (and not quite as boomy at most listening levels, the ATP3 has really pronounced bass at quiet levels but it equals out as you get to more normal, good listening levels) especially at louder levels, the sats. werent quite as clear as the ATP3s.

I would reccomend the Logitech z-340's. they are about $50 or less at stores and have a darn impressive sub and complete sound. Not to insult altec lansing, as they make very nice speakers, I just have more experience with Logitechs line. I just got them for my girlfriend and now I am really jealous as they blow the crap out of my cambridge soundworks speakers.

I have the Cabridge Soundworks 2.1 (2 satelite and a sub) and they work fine for me.

I did have to play around with the bass and treble settings in win2k to get the sound to my liking.

Maybe you want something a little more sophisticated... but after a whole semester of abuse at college they are still going strong!!

Try Altec Lansing 2100, looks great, and currently $30 mail in rebate until Jan 7, 2002. Sound is great also.

Edit: Forgot to tell you that it has a nice little wired remote with power and volume control.

I researched this issue two months ago and went for the Boston Acoustic BA790.
They sound great, will play in either digital or anolog output and have conveniently placed power, volume and bass controls on the right satellite speaker.
I got them for 70 bucks at BestBuy.
Presently 80 bucks at BestBuy or i see them for 63 bucks via Pricewatch.com at Neutronusa.com.

I've got a Labtec 2.1 setup that's a bit older, and it rocks. Very good bass that will rip your desk in half...Labtec are good speakers for the $$$.

But...if you're willing to spend $100, you could go buy Creative Inspire 5.1s for that much including tax. My friend has them paired with his Audigy Platinum EX and they are very sweet for the price.
