2.1 speaker question

I'm interested in the logitech z-2200 speakers, but I can't really find how they connect. I'm assuming it's just a 2-channel analog out with internal sub crossover - correct?

I currently have the 2-channel L/R coming out of my SB Live! 5.1 going to a regular stereo receiver/amplifier. If I add the z-2200s, could I use them as my fronts, my stereo as the rears, and have a 4.1 setup?

Any insights would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Technically you wouldnt have 4.1 since the .1 wouldnt be a different channel (internal crossover as you mentioned.) But, the setup would work as far as the other four speakers being able provide directional sound/surround in things like games.

Good point - so that begs the question of whether the z-2200s are really 2.1. Is there a discrete input for the sub, or is it connected via the crossover?

Are there both analog and digital inputs to these speakers? If there's no analog sub discrete, and no digital input, then they aren't technically 2.1s.

Thanks!

I personally wouldn't consider most 2.1 systems to be truly 2.1 (emphasis on the .1) but in the end it really shouldnt make much of a difference. One way to look at is is that speakers such as the 2200's make it so that the choice of where to split the audio into seperate devices is done on the speakers instead of the soundcard. In the case of most logitech speakers, in my personal experience, the bass tends to be pretty overpowered anyway, so perhaps a higher-end range of speakers would make a difference to an audiophile, but for the average gamer/music listener it's probably not going to make any difference at all.

Of course, that's why i just waited til i could find the z5300's on sale. =) (~$130 right now on NewEgg)

Logitech doesn't have much info on their site about whether the z2200s have both analog and digital inputs. Can someone who has these describe the inputs?

Analog only

1/8" stereo > SoundTouch Wired Remote Control > Sub > Satellites via RCA
