2.1 or 5.1 speakers

I'm planning to purchase new speakers and I dont' know which should i get 2.1 or 5.1 speakers. Most of my music files & movies(vcd) files have 2 stereo (Left and Right Audio). I don't watch DVD movies on this computer, just on standalone dvd player.

If the files of mp3/movies have only 2 left/right audio, can this produce 5 output to 5 speakers or just 2 speaker with subwoofer? 5 speakers seem too much for me to place by my computer.

I'm thinking of Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 or 5.1.

I have heard the promedia 2.1's and they are good. I don't like 4 or 5.1 setups since they take up so much room and the wires are a mess...that being said it you can set it up with minimal clutter...go for the 5.1 it does sound much better and immersive.

Does audio cd or any mp3 files produce sounds on all 5.1 speakers? Since they are only have left/right audio. or is it the sound card(creative) that transform into 5 speakers

I highly recommend the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's. I use them and am very happy with them. The only stuff I really use sound wise on my PC are games and MP3s. While some games might benifit a little from surround sound I don't like to listen to music in multi-channel. For anything I need surround for (movies for instance) I have a home theatre thats seperate from my PC 🙂

Audio CDs are only stereo, if you have a multichannel speaker system, you can mirror the front to the rear (stereo 2x). The soundcard or the speakers may have an option to upmix to surround (i.e. Creative has CMSS). A lot of people dislike most of these upmixing features and how they change the sound. There are always exceptions of course, like Pro-Logic 2 which quite a few people like.

If you have an Audigy 2, you can play DVD-Audio discs, these have high-resolution surround sound music. But the music selection is small, and the discs are usually more expensive.

If you listen to stereo music most of the time, IMHO it would be better to get 2.1 speakers of higher quality.

I agree. I have put around $15,000 or so into my main stereo/HT and most music still sounds like crap in multi channel. I have heard a handful of CDs mixed for it though and those can be pretty cool. But stuff mixed as 2 channel has never sounded good to me in surround. Thats one of the many reasons I went with the ProMedia 2.1s for my comp. If I want to watch movies and need surround...well thats what the HT is for, heh.

Like most have said...you have no need for 5.1 based on what you have posted. The surround nature used when playing audio on 5.1 setups is pretty lame sounding IMHO too! The upmixing separates or changes the sound so much that music selections are not at all enjoyable unless they are the discs specifically recorded for surround.

If you game at all then 5.1 sound is absolutely a major upgrade that is worth every penny you spend. Just having the surround for gaming is incredible!

Buy the best 2.1 speakers you can afford and you will be happy with what you get at today's prices (any good quality, good sounding brand is relatively inexpensive nowadays.)
