2.0 vs. 3.0 Pixel Shading

According to programmers that code for both ATI and Nvidia, there is no difference in image quality (right now). 3.0 is supposedly easier to code for and is more efficient (less work) at getting the same job done as 2.0.

So again, there is no image quality difference. On paper, 3.0 is supposed to be faster. Although there has been no titles out that are 100% SM3.0.

No titles that are 100% SM3.0? Best I can tell there has one been one recalled patc that is SM3.0. ;)

Thats only a partial PS3 implementation, otherwise the patch would be about 600 megs big, as u would have to recode the whole graphics engine again.

They only changed how the lighting passes, 4 in 1, instead of 1 in 1.

But it seems the X800 lends its mhz to processing the 2.0b faster than what the 6800 can process the 3.0 at for some reason.

But again there is no image quality increase, but detail can be increased loads, meaning image quality in that repect will increase. And it will be able to run at a decent speed also.

The only difference is that 3.0 has longer shader lengths, a few extra features and thats about it really.

Yes I know. that patch enabled some SM3.0 features. Thats why I said no titles are 100% SM3.0.
I guess that Half Life 2? Might be a ground up SM3.0 game. Not sure about that. I doubt it though.

Although there are no games which are 100% SM3.0 there are some SM3.0 demos although the only ones I know are PowerVR examples for their Series5 SM3.0 equipped gpu:-

PowerVR Cloth Animation with VS_3_0 and PS_3_0

PowerVR Voxel Rendering with PS_3_0

If rumours are true then PowerVR are also in the process of releasing new and improved demos to showcase SM3.0. After all it's in PowerVR's interest to make sure SM3.0 is well known and supported although you can only see Series5 in the arcades and not on the pc right now. :(

Half life 2 wil only have SM 2.0 because of the deal they had with ATI and there cards supporting the Shader and Truform components.

PS3.0 can do NOTHING ps2.0 cant do. but ps3.0 can do the same thing faster.

That explains it 100%

Yes, think of it like a 64-bit processor vs a 32-bit processor. There is definate performance to be had if implemented correctly on a large scale. Basically some things are also able to be implemented in SM3.0 and not on the SM2.0b cards due to the shader length and how many impractical passes it would take to implement on the SM2.0b cards (displacment mappiing, some instances of lighting, etc).

Makes rounded edges more realistic, if properly implemented, or it can just muck things up totally if not.

It has been rumoured that they will release a patch to include SM3 later on tho.
