1TB IDE RAID: need advice

This is silly if you ask me.

You really don't need that much storage space, sure it sounds cool, but in all reality, you don't need 1TB of space. Sure if you save every draft of everything you ever do, maybe, but thats silly, thats what long term storage was invented for...

INSTEAD.....

-get a DVD burner for backups of old stuff.
-get a fibre channel array. They will be BLAZING FAST, redundent, and probably not as much as your prospective IDE array. Plus you can just hook the fibre channel strait up to your computer. Really, look into this, its a much better investment. Even look for a used one on ebay.. im not sure on the prices.. it may be 2 pricey.. just don't waste your money on a 1TB ide array. Buy a faster computer, it too would be a better investment.

In addition, XOR on 14 drives is probably beyond the capasity of any processor that is not optimized for it. raid 5 on that many drives will be pushing it.
