Speaking of which,

My 1TB Raid 5 had a drive fail (well I believe it happened a while ago but I never paid attention. It works fine with the remaining drives, but now I got to RMA the bad one and pray rebuilding goes fine.

I wouldn't worry as much about the rebuild as I would about another drive failing before you get the other drive to even attempt the rebuild.

That was what I was thinking, but I realized it's been like this for MONTHS--oops. I always saw the degraded message on startup but didn't really know what it meant or cared :)

Hopefully it works out. The only thing that worries me is that I have 5 250gb drives, with 2x 4 Channels on this card. So I had to do 3 on their own channel, with 2 on the same one. The one that failed was one of those on that same channel--but everything else seems ok, but I had heard bad stories of when one drives goes both go on the same channel.

also I have a LSI Megraid ATA raid card (I think the i4)

You might have seen the pics if you post on 2cpu...

holy... may i ask what you do with all that space? And how much of it is filled?

2.2TB is filled. Most of it is filled with DVD rips and downloaded episode files. I also backup-to-disk my DCs, Exchange server, webserver, and shares that aren't stored on the server. (MS Action Pack kicks ass.)

For the record, the DVD rips are of DVDs I own and I buy DVD sets for the episodes I download whenever they get released. :)

And would you believe that server is running a Celeron? :)

What SATA RAID Controllers are you running?

None. Those are SuperMicro DAC-SATA-MV8 cards... they're simple PCI-X 8 port SATA controllers. That server is running Linux Software RAID.

yeah that case looks like it's for harddrives only. And did you build that rack yourself?

maybe i should have re-worded my post to say: what do you all do for backup for all this data? Sure, raid 5 protects if a drive fails.. but is that all you're worried about? what if the rebuild fails, or if you needed something you accidently deleted (don't go all high and might saying you never delete something by accident either, it's just a senario)?

Really just curious. I think RAID5 would be probably enough in all likelihood, but it's much too expensive to get a hardware raid 5 controller.. the one my friend had.. was slow as balls in writing.. something like 10MB/s :(
