Think you forgot RAm...Sound Card? I suggest wiher a hercules gametheater XP or Audigy. Some like the Santa Cruz too. And you should go for some better speakers. At least i would. I'd try the Z560 instead of the Z540 as they are better and have more power ;-P

for about $145 shipped you can get them on pricewatch.

The motherboard has 6 channel audio

It should be a nice setup
I don't know about the major ram though
I would go for 512megs if I were you.

I'd really pay the few bucks for better RAm and a sound card. You'll get better fidelity with an addon card than the c-media.

...monitor? i think you should go for a 19" crt.. they really arent all that expensive. i have the hitachi cm721f... HIGHLY recommended. i do everything at 1600x1200 (75Hz), and the 0.22 dot pitch is really crystal clear and sharp. rest looks pretty good though...

I too...am building my first computer. I would like some pointers/ideas on everything. I have already bought some of the items and am left with the most expensive of the items to purchase. I will put what I am thinking and you guys respond.

Mobo:MSI k7n420 Pro ..already bought
CPU: AMD 1800+ ...$81.70
Ram:eek:CZ 2400 256DDR.....2@$77
OS: Win 2k Pro...already bought
Case: Antec Performance Plus 660B....$103
Fan/Heatsink: Thermaltake Valcano 7...already bought
Modem: U.S. Robotics Performance Pro Hardware v.92.....$60
Monitor: NEC Multisync FE950+...$320
HDD: Western Digital 80gb 8mb cache

My main question is ...is the HDD I mentioned worth extra money for the extra cache?? I will be using this system for games and school programs such as Powerpoint..Photoshop..etc

also I am going to upgrade the Video as soon as I can to either GeForce 4ti 4200 or 4400...
and I believe the sound with be good enough for me..

crabbyman -
For the most part it all looks good, except..if I am not mistaken, your ram is from OCZ..that is a no-no. You never know what youre gonna get from them. I would reccomend Crucial of Mushkin ram instead.

also... I have never used a special edition western digital hard drive, but the 8mb cache has got to be great, especially if you have seen the opinions of anandtechers that do own these drives. It is probably worth the extra little bit.

my mobo already has integrated audio (6-channel codec) so a sound card shouldn't be needed right now. monitor is already taken care of and i was guna buy some ram from crucial for 10 buchs more but allot more likely to work right.

are you going to game with this? If so...get an actual sound card.

i am planing to game with this but i see it ass i can get a sound card if the quality isn't that great. secondly this saved me some money, i could get a nice sound card a few weeks after i want my system built. but not before then

Trust me, its not the best solution. :)

But, hey, its not my system.

I agree, at least get a cheap 30 buck sound card, I have the SB Live value, and I can tell you it works better than onboard sound anyday.

I plan on using the precluded Nvidia source for my sound. I heard it is just as good as the SB Live PCI sound cards...so thats good enough for me.

I don't hear any real difference between my built in c-media chip on my soyo dragon and my philips acoustic edge with my klipsch 4.1 speakers.
