So my wife and I are going on a cruise to Alaska next week. Neither of us have ever been on a cruise before and I'm looking for general advice. What to do, what not to, noob mistakes to avoid, etc.

Eat
Drink
Be Merry...

Cycle, rinse and repeat...

I don't know if there are noob mistakes to make. I'm sure that there are others that have taken may cruises on here that can give advise, but all I can say is that the one cruise that my family and I took was a blast.

We enjoyed the entire experience. The food was unbelievable....and unending. We didn't participate in the "formal" dining and opted to eat at the buffet style meals. There seems to be mixed reactions on the formal dining as some people love it...some people don't. It's up to you. The atmosphere was wonderful and the scenery was fantastic, the ship was beautiful and the staff was fantastic. The shows were really good....quite suprising to me actually. I found some of the excursions to be pricy and not as enjoyable as I thought they would be. The next time, I think we'll just leave the ship and enjoy the local atmosphere without paying large amounts of money to be escorted around the area.

Finally, I say to you...I hope you have a wonderful cruise.....and don't gain too much weight on the trip.

The quality of food is shocking when you think that they are making 20,000 meals a week.

1. Dont miss the boat drill, they WILL find you
2. Dont call it a boat ;)
3. The workers onboard are people and you should treat them as such (I weep because I have to say that :()
4. Dont like you table at dinner? Change it. Nothing is set in stone.
5. Dont gamble or go to the art auction except for free alcohol ;)

Are you going to be stopping in any of the towns? I loved the little towns along the coast.

I've never been on a cruise in my life. Personally, I don't think that you can get any feel for a place at all from the deck of a ship 10 miles offshore or from a few hours spent in a port city. It's like saying that you've experienced California because you've been to Universal Studios and Disney World.

I'm sure you'll have a good time though.

i did my first cruise last November. florida keys, mexico, bahamas. - There's nothing better than taking a week vacation with no driving, no cooking and not a care. Get up whenever you want, eat whenever you want, drink whenever you want ... it's endless. There's something awesome about drinking till your heart is content.

The cruise will have tons of events throughout the day, bingo, gambling, dance class, cooking class, wine tasting ... etc. Dinner is usually served at 2 times and you can pick your seating time. This is the 2nd best food on the boat and the best food is usually saved for the pay for your food, high end, restaurant.

Other than that, enjoy the trip and you tip everyone at the end. Let me know how you like the Alaska cruise and the cruise line. I want to do an Alaska Cruise.

A few hours is too much experience of California, IMHO.

1. Not to worry, we're serious about safety. We've got 4 kids that are excepting us to come back at some point. :D
2. An old Navy man taught me the difference between a ship and a boat, so no problem there.
3. It is sad that you have to say that, but I always try to be kind to those who have service jobs. Been there, done that.
4. I'll remember that. Nothing spoils good food like bad company.
5. :) Got nothing to gamble with and we'll just look at the art. ;)

And to you as well! Thanks for the link.

I like the idea of spending the vast majority of the money for the trip up front. I hate feeling like I'm being nickeled and dimed to death while on vacation.

Spend some time in Santa Barbara when it's not on fire and we'll see if you don't change you're mind. ;)

That wont change. Just you wait ;)

Though, it's still cheaper than your average vacation.

One major expense we won't have is alcohol. Neither of us enjoy it, so I think we get a pass on that one.

Mosquito repellent is your friend.

Hadn't thought of that one. I'm assuming that Alaska specific, not that cruise ships have mosquito problems.

If that's all the time you've spent here then you are clueless and have no business commenting on this state or its people.

One final recommendation...(if you want to stay married)...

Stay away from the top "Adults only" deck! :Q

(no sneaking up there either)! ;)

I've been there longer than that. Exactly why I can say it.

Although, I will say that it's amazing to see so many young people pregnant or with children. That means something when it comes from someone who calls Detroit home. Be proud.

I just came back from a cruise in the Mediterranean. I went to Ibiza from Barcelona and to the south of France (French Riviera). It was a good experience but nothing and I mean NOTHING could have prepared me for all that flabby, old wrinkled chests that I had to see all week long.

I've seen more on nude beaches than cruise ships. :p:D:(
