1st time builder. Please check my system

hi

1st time builder here. My goal is to build a good, fast, but quiet system for general power use and some gaming. I'm looking at.

AHANIX dboX (BLUE/SILVER) MID-TOWER PC CASE
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=11-126-110

I like the fact that the case lets me control the speed of the fans. Anyone has this case and knows how noisy the fans in it are? the ahanix site doesn't have the info. I also thinks it looks nice. and looks count for me 🙂

ASUS Motherboard for Intel Pentium 4 / Celeron Processors, 800Mhz FSB Model# P4P800 Deluxe Retail
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=11-126-110

probably overpaying here, but this thing has everything sata, ieee, 802.11b, on board sound (I don't plan a separate sound card).

Intel Pentium 4 / 2.8CGHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB - RETAIL

anyone knows the db rating on the included fan? it's a retail box, so are the fan and heatsink already on the cpu and i just have to drop it onto the mobo? if i want to put in my own quieter HSF, is it easy to take the built-in hsf off?

Antec 430W Power Supply TRUE430
touted as quiet

CORSAIR 512MB PC3200 VALUE SELECT. VS512MB400 DDR RAM
Seagate 160GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive Barracuda

not much to comment there

ATI All-In-Wonder RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB DDR 8X AGP Bulk

Seems a little insane to spend $361 on a vid card, but newegg has the 9800PRO non-AIW for about same price. what's the perf difference between the pro and se version? they don't seem to have a AIW non pro though

Do you see any glaring error or incompatibility. My biggest concern is the case. better suggestions?

thanks.

i would get an antec 380 W truepower to save some money

also, kingston is doing there hyperX pc3200 kits for $104. with 865/875 chipsets you really want to run dual channel

Your system looks good, somewhat similar to what I recently built.

Not sure if your HSF is the same as what came with my 2.6C.
It was not bad though, not too loud and did a decent job cooling.

I later added my Zalman HSF for more quiet and better cooling for overclocking.
The retail HSF does not come attached to CPU. It is easily removed later if you want to change it.

You can go to the Zalman website for a short video on how to attache one of those, you can also go to the Arctic Silver site for info on proper application of heatsink paste.

CompUSA has seagate 120gb on sale for 60 AFR if you wanna save some money i suggest picking it up, i got it earlier today, havn't hooked it up yet tho.

oh that's right. I forgot about the dual channel thingy. thanks.

shady, you're talking about this right?

the mobo has 4 mem slots. if i add two more sticks later on, do they have to be 2x256 too, or can I get 2x512 or whatever size? in other words, do they have to be all identical or just identical per pair.

slogun:
yeah, I think I'll get the zalman. don't want to be cheap and get stuck with noisy cpu fan. then, should I try to save some money and get the OEM version of the CPU (no HSF). what does the retail give you besides HSF? better warranty? better instructions?

you can o/c the 2.6 to 3.2? Wow, maybe I should try doing that instead of getting the 2.8. does o/c just involve setting something in the BIOS setup, assuming I have the zalman installed. also, what does the C in P4C mean?

lastly, anyone knows a place like newegg.com (large selection, good price all around) not based in CA, so I don't have to pay taxes?

thanks all

Each memory controller needs the same amount. IE, you can have 2x256 right now, and add in 2x512 later.

Warranty, I believe. If they are around the same price, within $5, I'd get the retail. With my AMD stock HSF, I took the fan and used it as a case fan. It spins faster than other ones do.

C means 800 FSB I think. I'd even reccomend going down to the 2.4 to save another $40.

Newegg is the best. Even if you pay taxes, you save on shipping and delivery time.

Yea, retail gives you a 3 year warrantee as opposed to a 1 year.

Yes, the 2.6 overclocks easily to 3.2, actually I got it up to 3.4 but I find that scary.
You overclock these boards by using setting in the BIOS, mostly adjusting the FSB. If you have an ASUS mobo, look through the stickied thread for that board in mobo forum for specifics.

Get the highest CPU you can afford

Newegg is the best, but Directron and SVC are also good online retailers (Outpost.com, but I think they are CA also).
