i have a blue screen of death problem which says:
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. if this is the first time you've seen theis stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps: check for viruses on your computer. remove any installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

can someone please offer some suggestions as to what to try. could this have something to do with the fact that i took the hd out of my dell dimension 8400 to use in this new build? thanks a lot.

That depends. Did you take the hard drive out of the Dell, slap it in the new machine and try to boot? Is so, then yeah probably 😉

If you did a reinstall of Windows on that HDD after you removed it, there's something else going on.

Put the drive back in your Dell.

Install the driver for the IDE controller chip on the new motherboard.

Move drive back to new machine.

(That is likely to get you good results but there's no guarantee.)
