1st time build, can't figure out problems :(

  1. Overview of the problem
    1.) Long hang on boot after crcdisk.sys
    2.) MSI driver & utility CDs for video card, mobo won't load drivers in safe mode
    3.) Can not boot regularly (hangs on any interaction

  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
    So, I thought since I have a technical background I could handle this on my own, but that's not the case.....

    It's a fresh build, my first one. Loading Vista took a looooong time, and each boot takes a looooong time. This is in part not only because of the hang after loading crcdisk.sys, but because of the Windows loading screen afterwards. Whenever I boot into the regular mode, I try to type in my password, either hitting a key or clicking in the entry field causes the system to stall.

    I tried loading into Safe mode and loading all of the drivers. When I loaded the included MSI driver CDs and start the software, there is no option to load the drivers! Also, when I try downloading the drivers from the MSI site, they don't recognize that the equipment is MSI equipment, and won't load the drivers. Vista currently has loaded its own drivers for both mobo chips and video card.

    I actually managed to update the video card driver by having Vista search the install folder, but that driver seems to not work, as even Safe mode won't load now.

    Since the system loads into Safe mode, and I can access things (albeit slowly) I am assuming it's not a faulty mobo, video card, or PSU. Is this a bad assumption?

    I also read that the system may need to be cycled a few times to have the correct drivers loaded for my DVD and HDD drive.

  3. I already tried these steps:
    1.) Loading the drivers manually
    2.) Checking BIOS for wrong voltages
    3.) Checking for a faulty HD (formatting, chkdsk)

  4. My software:
    • Windows Vista Home Premium w/SP1
    • No Antivirus
    • No Firewall

  5. My hardware

    • Custom build
    • MSI P45 Platinum
    • Core 2 Duo 7200 (stock)
    • MSI HD 4850 (stock)
    • Corsair 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
    • Silverstone ST400 400W
    • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB 7200 RPM IDE
    • SATA DVD drive (OEM)


    Any help would be GREATLY appreciate. School is starting soon, and I need to get this fixed so it's out of my head....
 
Yeah, the hang after crcdisk.sys problem seems to be pretty common. However, all of the info I've gathered seems to point at unknown root causes, mainly because I've seen that that's the last driver to load.....
 
This is a hardware problem of some sort in my estimation.

I would check and see if there is an updated BIOS at the MSI site. Flash to it if one is available and try installing Vista again. This is a new install on a new build so all you have to lose is time.

You may also want to run a diagnostic on your HD and run Memtest on your memory. I repeatedly hear of people correcting issues here by running just one stick of RAM initially. You may want to give that a try also. You should check the voltage requirements on your RAM and make sure your motherboard is providing that voltage. There will be adjustments available in your BIOS.

Yours is a very high end motherboard and the BIOS settings can be quite complex. You may want to check in the Motherboard forum and see if there are posts related to your board.

There's an extremely good chance that your problem is trying to use an E7200 with a BIOS that doesn't support it. That means you'll either have to buy, beg, borrow, or steal an older processor to put in it, then update the BIOS using the older processor. You can use any of the 65nm processors (E6x00's, E6x50's, Q6x00's), or one of the cheaper E2x00's.

You seem to have fallen for the "supports 45nm processors" ploy that all motherboard manufacturers like to use. Yes, your board and it's BIOS will support some 45nm processors (any E8400), but none of the others, until it's BIOS has been updated. Good luck, and have fun.🙂

How is it that it boots? His processor was supported in the original release dated 5-21-2008, the 7512v10.zip. IMO, you're sending him down the wrong road.
 
Update:

I just ran the Seagate HD scanning tool, and Memtest86, and the HD and RAM don't seem to have any problems with them. Also, I pulled out a stick of RAM, and reinstalled Vista 32 bit, to see if that helped. I (thankfully!!!) was able to load the CD drivers, restarted to load the video card drivers, and now it won't boot past the login screen. Hrm....

Also, myocardia, my processer IS supported by this bios, I made sure to check on that beforehand, and also the MSI site (the 7512v10 BIOS) lists it as being supported...
 
Is there an option when loading the drivers off the CD to load them one at a time? That's what I would do. One at a time, with a reboot after each one. You need to isolate which driver is causing your problem.

If you can't do this with the CD, you'll need to get them from the MSI site.

If I understand correctly, the only change you've made is going from two sticks of RAM to one. This is telling me that your BIOS settings need to be changed in that regard. Did you check voltages? Are you running the latest BIOS? Did you update it?

However, you're not being specific enough in your OP. What memory do you have? I see voltage requirements all over the map. I see 1.9V, 2.0V, 2.1V, 2.2V and 2.4V. That's just what comes up at Newegg. They may make more modules with other voltage requirements. The timings are all over the map too. You should adjust these manually along with the voltages. Have you done this?

I told you that you have a very high-end motherboard. These boards can take a lot of attention to detail to get set up right. I'm going to come right out and say it, IMO these types of boards are a very bad choice for a first build. Please tell me you're not overclocking at this point.

In addition, technically your Power Supply is not underpowered. But from a practical standpoint it is. Read the article on the AnandTech homepage about Power Supplies. Decide from there if you need more power.

Yeah, there is such an option, and I just tried that. I loaded the P45 chipset drivers, and rebooted, and Vista then booted to a black screen. I could boot to Safe mode, but then the CDs wouldn't recognize the hardware. I think this is interesting, because it's an indicator that Safe mode won't recognize what the mobo / video card (and thus won't load drivers), and that I should just load all the drivers at once, and see if that helps. I've pulled off all of the drivers from the MSI site, so I'll be using those, instead of the CD ones.

Also, the voltages on the mobo all have an "autodetect" setting. I have been leaving that setting alone, but I'll manually set that from now on. Also, I'll make sure that the RAM timings are correct, and then go through EVERY OTHER option in the BIOS and make sure it's correct.

Regarding the BIOS, I was very tempted to flash it. However, my understanding is that you're not supposed to flash the BIOS unless you know that your system is stable. Is that true in every case, or is this an example of an exception?

Also, I'm definitely not overclocking yet. Obviously, I had this in mind for a future project, maybe a few months down the road, which is why I chose this motherboard. I'll check into the PSU issue in a sec...
 
I have fixed weird motherboard issues by flashing the BIOS on new builds. Once to the same version that was on it.

For the longest time, I've flashed the BIOS on a new build if there is a new one availabe. Before I even start to install the OS.

Edit: Flash to the latest BIOS, go through the settings with a fine toothed comb and if you're still are having troubles, I'd RMA the motherboard. Installing chipset drivers should not cause the problem you're having.
