righto, nice an simple, im in London, England, am about to (sometime within a few weeks hopefully) going to attempt to build my 1st PC, have owned 4 lovely Dells in the past, but time has come to create a mistress...bwahaha (and i do mean lovely on the dells, i know most people here arnt too bothered by them, but for a commercial product they are better than a lot of the price alternatives avail in UK).

I am used to going inside a case, have changed graphics & sound cards before now, also memory, and even once managed to succesfully install a new HDD into a Dell PC and get it running again :)

Mainly what im after at the moment is comments on whether the components i put here are:
a) compatible
b) suitable for a cheapish but reasonably performing PC setup
c) possibly overclockable, but this isnt strictly necessary (this build is more to see if i can do it)
d) and also what would be a compatible system in a Dell Pentium machine (specs, not cost)
(all components listed are available from my local branch of PC World as they have a component shop department which isnt too badly priced)

Now one thing i need to make clear is that if posters make alternative suggestion to a product please make sure its available to buy in the UK, i dont mind paying UK postage but not from overseas companies, also preferably known companies rather than fly-by-night merchants.

thanking you guys/girls in advance for any comments with much appreciation,
(and if anyone has any useful bits of knowledge for the actual physical task of building the PC please feel free to post, for instance tools that are useful to have to hand or make sure you do this before this type thing, i will be checking forums and magazines for info nearer the time, but so far i've seen a lot of helpful and friendly comments by people here in AT so i really would appreciate input :)

ok, spec.....

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz, 512kb Cache, 1600FSB (UK£105 = US$178)

Mobo: ABit KV8Pro (UK£70 = US$119)

RAM: Corsair Value Select 512Mb PC3200 Non ECC (UK£73 = US$124)

HDD: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, 80Gb (UK£47 = US$80)

Optical: Samsung SD616E DVD-ROM (UK£18 = US$31)

Case: Jeantech Blue Tint ATX Midi (JN7788/s)no PSU (UK£30 = US$51)
or Jeantech Light Fusion, with 300w PSU (UK£53 = US$90)

PSU: If needed, either FSP Silent Kit for AMD All In One PSU, CPU fan + system fan (UK£50 =US$85)
or Jeantech 450w with 120mm fan Gold (but no CPU/system fans) (UK£40 = US$68)

total cost for these components with the Jeantech Blue Tint is UK£393 = US$668
with the Jeantech Light Fusion UK£400 = US$680
(just so you know, i've gone on a UK£1.00 = US$1.70 conversion rate, but please understand, in the UK we pay more for most consumer items as we are stupid, so if what i've shown sounds too high dont worry, its simply the nature of companies in the UK to overcharge us)

main questions i have are:
1) Is the 300w PSU ok or am i better to replace it with the 450w ones, if so which PSU package is better?
2) Is the CPU heatsink/fan you get when you buy the processor suitable, or am i better with the FSP Silent Kit and its included CPU fan, i dont mind upgrading that at a later date for OC'ing.
3) I want a case with a window for amusment factor, also as i will most likely sell this a while after its built and running, not for profit, simply to recoup my losses, i have a Dell PC atm that most likely outperforms this (see my specs in sig, i assume thats more powerful than this?) so no need to keep and i think a windowed case will haul in more interest from people in my office...lol

Oh, in case you noticed there was no graphics card listed, its simply because its very very difficult getting much choice in cards in the UK (that are any good, lots of crap mx's...lol) so im gonna hold off on that till nearer Xmas when the market gets flooded by them...hehe....if 6600GT is in AGP flavour that im thinking might be a price compatibel card with this system, yae or nae to that?

right, gotta go home now (brilliant way to pass time at work this...lol)
i look forward to seeing some comments when i check later on, once more in advance thankyou to those who comment :)

toodlepip :)

Athlon64's need strong 12V rails. From MSI support forum:

POWER SUPPLIES

No single component in a computer system is more important than the Power Supply.
With the advent of AMD's Athlon64 series of processors, this subject has to rank at the top
when it comes to component selection. In an effort not to influence or possibly mislead potential PSU buyers, it is felt that we should only provide the necessary requirements that are needed for these newer processor/motherboard combinations. Absolutely of utmost importance is amperage ratings - and especially on the +12v line. A suggested safe minimum of 24a on the +12v rail. There have seen some members that are satisfied with their 18 or 20amps on +12v....but as they add components to their systems, the requirement will likely change - and a bigger supply may be needed to power their system. While you don't need more than you will use, having a buffer that allows you to do some upgrades without having to change your PSU in the near future is always a good investment.

I'm from the UK, and if you list a total budget, it may be possible to find something nicer for that price.
Definately don't skimp on the case or PSU. Very important components.
Try and post a total budget if you can (and I'm assuming you have a monitor already)

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer...&product_uid=40965 120GB Maxtor £45
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer...&product_uid=40968 80GB Maxtor £34
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer...&product_uid=66402 512MB Corsair PC3200 £58
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer...&product_uid=52561 512MB Samsung £59
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/MSI2.html nForce 3 939 MSI K8N Neo2-54G £94
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki...sku=303412&cks=PRL Epox EP-9NDA3+ £94
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer...&product_uid=79190 3000+ 939 £104
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer...&product_uid=72877 £39 Samsung DVD-RW
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/...g/GeForce_6800_GT.html 6800GT for £230 (128MB card though)

Total for a 3000+ with 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD and Socket 939 motherboard is £330, about £15 more than your pricing, and included a DVD-RW too :)

Decent cheap PSU's are almost impossible to find, similar story with cases.
Don't buy something just because, there are a lot of PSU's out there that will not even come close to being good for your needs, even if they have ratings of 600w!
PSU = hard to find for a decent price, trust me, I spent ages looking.

Stay away from PC World - thier component prices are way steeper than the on-line equivilants of both Ebuyer or Overclockers or Scan.

I would personnaly scrap the whole idea of getting a windowed case (the novelty of seeing inside wears off after a couple of months) and replace the case/PSU with an Antec Sonata. (IMHO).

I want want mild overclocking ie:10-15% go for the MSI boards and stay with the stock fans.

Your price on the ram sounds astounding. Corsair Value Select runs at most $80 US retail.

wow, im happy to get home from a night out and find some responses already, this is good :)
(im also slightly drunk so do excuse me...lol)

Ok, so, PSU-wise i need to find something decent, Antec apparently seem to be the recommended choice.....

Case-wise, well, i know the windowed effect wears off, but the main reason for it is so i can sell it to someone at work probably by that novelty alone.....lol
that way my 1st build test doesnt cost me anything, i only work part time....hehe

um, what do i respond to next....er...ok, easy one, yes, i do have a spare monitor lying around, 17in Dell from my 2nd computer, im pretty sure i still have the install disk so shouldnt be a problem using that........

the RAM thing, Mem, cheers, i totally forgot about crucial...lol....

as for PC World, my main reason for them was for the case as its a bulky heavyish item, i dont mind spending a few extra quid from them as i can pick it up locally, gotta be cheaper than postage cost.......for other items, im happy to go with e-tailers provided they have a decent reputation for actually delivering the goods...

Lonyo, i see one of your links goes to a SLI motherboard available around December time, i must admit thats a promising idea.....2 x 6600GTs will be within my price range eventually at a push...

um someone asked my budget, well, i dont have a budget per se, its more a case of i want to build a PC just to see if i can do it properly, so i dont want to spend too much as i dont want to risk fragging compenents that cost a lot if i screw up....lol.........i'd rather not screw up more than £350-400 worth if i can help it....hehe

right, tomorrow at work im gonna do a proper check at those e-tailer sites to see what i can come up with and update my possible PC setup...hehe, then u can all pick me to pieces and let me know what u think, thankyou so much for the advice :)

in a few minutes im going to pass out, so i'll say nyte nyte now in case i do so in my armchair instead of my bed.....lol :)

ok, i did some running around the e-tailer sites yesterday (a lot easier than running round half a dozen shops...lol)

and using the advice given above by folks i got this list together.

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (S939) £93
AMD Winchester 64 3000+ 90nm (S939) £104
512Mb Crucial PC3200 RAM £59
Samsung TS-H55213 (16x dual layer) £39
Maxtor 6Y080L0 Plus9 80Gb UDMA133 £34
Jeantech Blue Tint case £30
Antec True Power 430PGB 430watt £60
Gainward Ultra Goes Like Hell 6600GT
(with GDDR3) (not yet available tho) £194

total cost £613

ouch, thats a bit steep...lol......

i need to trim this down a bit, to say £450 tops. This PC is just a test build, i currently have a Dell that happily handles my games and will do so for a year i imagine (with a vid card upgrade probably..lol) I want this PC to work reasonably well, but we are only talking fast enough to run recent games on lower resolutions/detail settings, or older games like RTCW on higher settings.....i want to sell it to someone who just wants a PC for varied use and doesnt need it to go like the clappers, that way i get my money back and gain some experience so that in another 10 months i can do it all again, but next time im building a Behemoth level one...lol

so any ideas where some fat can be trimmed folks? im guessing the graphics card can be stripped down to a normal 6600GT rather than a Gainward jobbie, that should knock off £50, how about the motherboard? i dont mind if this thing works on older S734 technology (i think i got the socket number right..lol) so would that mean being able to knock say £30 off the mobo and mebbe £20 off the CPU for the older S734 3000+?...if so thats £100 gone already........sound ok so far? whats next, hmm, well i dont need a DVDRW as im not keeping it, cheap DVD with CDRW capability is enuff, so im sure if i look i can pick one up for £20 so thats saving £20 more, the case i guess i'll have to lose the window then (*cries*) and get a cheaper one for around £20, so that saves a tenner, which just leaves the PSU, im sure i can pick up a still decent PSU for £40 saving another £20, so thats a second total saving of £50 which makes £150 :)
so assuming i can put together those parts from e-tailers easy enuff we are talking around £463, now thats within my tolerances :)

ok, i gotta get in the bath, when im at work i'll hunt down some parts and list them, if you guys would be happy to recomment on the new choices i'd much appreciate it :)
(and please if possible tell me what kind of Dell setup you think would be the performance equivelant, i know the Dell prices take into account various software with it, im just curious about comparing an AMD setup to a Pentium setup)

cheers :)

I dug out one of my really really old pages here.

This is a list of quite a few UK sites. Quite often being ones local to me (Newcastle).

Some of the links, you will need to fix but you might find a good deal from it someday.

I accept no responsibility as to how good certain vendors are or arent as the case may be.

One thing is, Crucial is a top notch company which I love to do business with. Ordered and delivered within 24 hours for free (in my experience) and excellent customer support. Wish more companies were like Crucial.

right, new list, gimme what you think about it please :)

MOBO: Abit KV8 (S754) £ 65 (overclockers.co.uk)
CPU : AMD 64 3000+ Newcastle £100 (overclockers.co.uk)
RAM : Crucial 512Mb PC3200 £ 59 (crucial.com/uk)
HDD : Maxtor DiamondMax 80Gb 8mb Cache ATA133 £ 46 (retail version, ebuyer.com)
DVD : AOpen COM5232G 52x/32x/52x/16x CD-RW/DVD £ 25 (retail version, overclockers.co.uk)
GPU : XFX GeForce 6600GT 128MB DDR3 TV-out £159 (overclockers.co.uk)
Case : Antec SLK1650B Black Quiet Mini Tower Case £ 47 (overclockers.co.uk)
PSU : Antec 350w SmartPower (included in case) £ (overclockers.co.uk

Total Cost: £501

ok this is better price wise, still need to trim £50 tho, this is due to the fact i'll need to get a copy of WinXP Home to go on it which is £80 give or take.......

firstly would you say these components are all in line with each other in respect to performance? meaning i dont want to be paying for something thats too fast for the rest of the system when i could go cheaper and keep an even keel.

secondly any ideas where i can trim the fat? can i drop to a 2800+ Newcastle to save a tenner and still OC it up to a 3000+ or higher safely? Where else can i save money? i prefer the HDD and the DVD to be retail versions just so i have all the manuals/drivers etc to make my first build easier. The only other place i could save some money is the graphics card, either a 9800 Pro or 5900XT seem to be the choices, they allow me to save around £20....can either of those be bought up to an 9800XT level of performance (meaning approx equivelant to a 6600GT just without the newer technology), i've heard 9800 Pro's can be modded....

so with those changes (drop to a 2800+ and a cheaper graphics card) i am on £470 which i guess is jussssttt about good enough.....hehe.....altho if anyone knows a Mobo for mebbe £15-20 cheap that doesnt sacrifice too much let me know.....

i cant wait till the cash is available to begin this project....hehe...

cheers again in advance for any comments :)

Edit: almost forgot, cheers for that link Elcs, went thru it, some good info resulted, altho by the looks of it i can get pretty much all this PC from Overclockers.co.uk bar the memory and HDD cheapest......in fact at one point i almost thought i should just order it ready made, till i remembered the whole point of this is to learn to build the thing...LMAO

Soltek SL-K8AV2-RL@£56.75 from CCL Computers.

80GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 (£ 36.91 inc VAT)

same place.

It`s all down to how badly you want to save those pennies ;).

i prefer the HDD and the DVD to be retail versions just so i have all the manuals/drivers etc to make my first build easier.

Nothing wrong with OEM,you don`t need drivers for your HD or even your DVD drive, IDE cables come with the motherboard anyway and you can get manuals/guides etc from the net,so go to Maxtor`s website,FYI the jumper settings will be on the HD anyway, btw my OEM maxtor is going strong after 3 years and took no time at all to set up.

coo, cheers Mem, with the HDD is that a retail boxed version or OEM?i cant seem to find out, i really would prefer retail unless the OEM will come with a manual or easy install guide.......

same goes for the Mobo thinking about it, OEM or retail boxed version?

being new to the game of building i prefer to have decent instructions available to me.....lol

btw, will there be much difference betwee 2800+ and 3000+? or can i OC it to that level?

Oh YAY, 5pm, time to leave work....hurrah! gonna have a quick bash on the fruitie in the bookies when i get off the train then i'll be back on to check for any more comments by folks :)

EDIT: guess i shouldnt have taken so long to get this message on, entered it then saw your edit....LOL
cheers :)

HD is OEM I believe,Soltek is retail.Btw do remember you need to add delivery cost, depending on where you order from.

HD guide here,plenty around.

I must not forget Mechbgon`s HD guide

Also remember:

Scan have daily deals.
Overclockers change their deals every Thurs evening
Ebuyer postage costs are crazy (but their prices are nearly the best)

Only go retail on

Motherboard
Case & PSU
CPU.

If you realy want to save the pennies (and you mentione about getting a beast next year) you can still pick up a 2500xp mobile and OC to 3200 (socket A)

might sound a bit odd, but when it comes to the things like postage and tools, thermal whatsit, etc i dont worry about that, its purely the cost of the components i want to keep as close to £450 as possible....lol..the postage is something i expect whenever i do something i cant necessarily get from a shop....

bobalong, i havnt heard very good things of scan so im not too willing to try them, Overclockers & Ebuyer have 'generally' got good reports, altho like all companies they have had their problems and appeared in PC Gamers/Zone watchdog section...lol

next year (meaning in around 12 months) i'll be building a true beast, SLI job with the best and most overclockable parts money can buy, full cooling system, the works, hence my desire to get started soon on a cheaper setup for practice...lol

anyhow, so does what i've listed so far sound compatible in regards to performance per part compared to the other parts? and can anyone tell me what its equivelant Dell setup be?

cheers for the advice on going retail with mobo, case/psu and cpu tho, should save a few extra quid and bring me more or less to the £450 mark :)

(oh, and can the 64 2800+ be OC to 3000+ or better?)

pc spec looks nice, not sure about the 6600GT as my position is generally that gamers would want a particularily fast card, while a non-gamer could save a lot of cash and buy a slow one that they will still be well overpowered for their needs. Of course, I'm obviously wrong there since the midrange cards sell like crazy, I just dont understand it.

Anyway, other than that, all looking good and nicely leaves you open for a fairly cheap upgrade option in future by sticking a second 512mb stick of ram in there (i.e., make sure you buy 1x 512mb stick, not 2x 256mb ones).

overclockers.co.uk arent known for their cheapness, or quality for that matter (range is pretty decent though, in that they have a lot of good stuff). ebuyer and komplett are probably most competitive with prices most of the time.

ebuyer have been absolutely fine for me several times now, but then I've never had to return anything to any etailer, and thats usually where the problems start. Crucial is always reccomended for RAM, both for the medium level stuff and now also even for performance due to their competetive Ballistix stuff. ALWAYS use credit card to buy online, not switch/maestro - the law gives you a lot of protection with ccards, get screwed when paying by switch and YOU foot the bill.

List of places I always check before buying compy stuff - in the rough order I do it:

cheers Davegod, while i was at work earlier tho, overclockers.co.uk actually seemed to beat ebuyer for price on most of the items i listed....lol...at least as best as i could tell, i think the HDD might end up being cheaper from ebuyer tho if i go OEM.......
dont worry, i always use c/card online....hehe......

would you say tho that im keeping more inline with the other components with a 6600GT or a 9800 Pro (modded if possible)?
also how well do you think this system would compare to my current Dell? (the specs listed in my sig)

oooh the frustration, my Ikea cabinet housing my hifi/TV broke......have had to order a new one, sadly thats going to put back my puter building by a month :-(

reason being the new rack from Optimum is a 4 shelf affair with 10mm glass, so its £400....ack....
on the plus sound it should help isolate more vibration from my Quake subwoofer...lol

ah well, i'll post again in january/feb when i get round to starting the build to let you know how its going :)
