1st Notebook

This will be a desktop replacement and possibly used for a game or two.

I have never owned a laptop/notebook so I have no idea what is "good"

These are the ones I have narrowed it down to.

NOTEBOOKS

Which would be best? Seems like the HP and the Sony are nice. But I though HP was junk? or is that just what I remember from their early desktops?

The Acer, with 2 drawbacks. One is the screen's resolution - it's a little low for a desktop replacement. The other is that I've heard that Acer laptops can be poor quality, you'd want to check up on this model before buying. The Acer has a newer CPU, more RAM, more video memory, etc.

I don't know how you feel about Dell, but I got a Inspiron 1720 with about $600 off and I love it. Final price was about $1100, would have been $1250 or so with the 8600m GT.

Are you going to travel around with it? If not then look at some 17'' models for "true" Desktop Replacement. Dell's Inspiron 1720 and HP's 9000 series come to mind on the cost-wise end. Then there's always Sager, Dell's XPS line, and Alienware for hardcore gamers/users.

Almost pulled the trigger on the HP. Chickened out during checkout .... heh

If gaming is a factor at all, realize that the Acer has the 8600M GT, which is way faster than the 8600M GS in the HP. Not to mention the CPU is decently faster and better on battery life.

On second thought, I be tthat 1280 X 800 is a misprint and it's really 1440 X 900. I've never seen a 17" with that res, it just doesn't make sense.

HP is not a junk anymore they are compitive with Dell right now. I would go with HP because it weights only 7.7 pound than any other notebook you mentioned.

No need to give up desktop I have both notebook and desktop because desktop have everything notebook does not have and either one does down I can use it for back up.
