Not really hot in my mind.

You can find new 3rd generation i3s for about the same price if you find one on sale. Not a refurb but a new computer

i5-2450m is a 2.5 ghz base with a maximum dual core turbo of 2.8 ghz and a maximum single core turbo of 3.1 ghz. Also has intel hd 3000 graphics.

i3-3110m is 2.4 ghz base with no turbo. It has intel hd 4000 graphics.
Thus the i5-2450m has 4% higher clock speed when it isn't turboing, 16% higher clock speed when it turbos as a dual core, 29% higher clock speed when it turbos as a single core.

The recently released the intel i3-3120m which is 2.5 ghz base with no turbo. It has intel hd4000 graphics.
Thus the chips are the same speed when it isn't turboing. 12% higher clock speed when it turbos as a dual core, 24% higher clock speed when it turbos as a single core.

Don't forget ivybridge increased ipc by about 4-10% for the same clock speed, besides getting better idle power (better battery life) and much better integrated graphics.
