TSMC fastest-growing semiconductor supplier in 1Q08, says IC Insights

In IC Insights? May update to The McClean Report, the market research firm highlights a major disruption taking place amongst the top 20 semiconductor supplier rankings after collating revenue results from the first quarter of 2008. Leading the pack in sales growth is TSMC, which saw sales grow by 44 percent compared to the same quarter in 2007. TSMC move up the rankings slightly, from 6th position to 5th, according to IC Insights.

AMD?s sales may have increased but the company still slid two positions from 10th to 12th.

AMD actually had a better quarter in terms of sales growth than Intel (22% vs. 16%) in the 1Q07 to 1Q08 analysis.

that chart doesn't make any sense. how was amd #10 in 2007 with sales of 1.233 billion while infineon was #12 with sales of 1.282 billion? also, qualcomm was 1.259 billion but was somehow #14, nxp was #11 with 1.390 billion and freescale was 16 with 1.295 billion. WTF??? Are they using the total year for 2007 to rank them instead of comparing them quarter/quarter? That appears to be the case, but the quarter/quarter comparison seems to make more sense to me.

Infineon's 1Q07 sales are more than AMD's 1Q07 sales but Infineon's overall 2007 sales were lower than AMD's overall 2007 sales. (edit, had this reversed!)

The farthest left-hand column is the ranking by 1Q08 sales (only the 1st quarter of 2008). The second column is the ranking for all of 2007's sales.

So the 1st column (labeled "1Q08 Rank") correlates with the 7th column (labeled "1Q08 Tot Semi").

Here we see AMD's 1Q08 sales listed as 1.505B whereas Infineon's is 1.570B and Qualcomm's is 1.620B.

Contrast this to one year eariler when AMD's 1Q07 sales were 1.233B but Infineon's was 1.282B and Qualcomm's was 1.259B.

The reason the rankings seem jumbled when you go from 1Q07 to 2007 overall is because the 2007 overall rankings can be skewed for some companies who have more seasonality to their sales or when certain highly anticipated products fail to gain traction and a particular company simply doesn't grow as fast as the market (see Texas Instruments and Toshiba).

no, I get that, it's just annoying that they didn't explain that when they displayed the chart.

Well to be fair to the chart's orginators, IC Insights, they sell this data as part of a much larger report called The McClean Report...so who knows how much sense the data actually makes when viewed in its originally delivered context.

We get what we pay for, IC Insights lets out these snippet freebies for self-promotion purposes and I agree the repackaging efforts kinda mangles the end-product.

Got to read between the lines and reassemble some of the rationale when you try and use this free info to do any critical thinking.
