SuperBiiz has $5 off $25 right now, could try a G4560 and go i5/i7 (maybe used Xeon?) later; and pricewatch has a nice selection of cheap Gigabyte H110 (2 ram slots $40) / B150 boards (4 ram slots, $50).

There is always the option of an R7 1700 that is getting cleared out with a nice under-volt. ;)

Greetings B-Riz,

G4560 seems like lower pricewise, the main diff for my needs is the clock, smartcache and the avx, the rest is not interesting, I do wonder if it is better to get the G4560. I don't intent to upgrade the cpu later on, so if futurewise is important (not sure how it will), than the i3 is the better choice.
and pricewatch has a nice selection of cheap Gigabyte H110 (2 ram slots $40) / B150 boards (4 ram slots, $50).
where I live, the cheapest board I've been able to find is what stated above, I don't mind having just two ram slots, it is cheaper to buy 1 chip of 8Gb rather than 2 of 4Gb.
There is always the option of an R7 1700 that is getting cleared out with a nice under-volt. ;)
the R7 1700 costs 2.5 times the i3-7100, for less than that, I can get an true quad like 8100 and finish the debate.

Is AVX2 *needed* for running the home networking server?
agreed, it isn't needed but the clockrate increase and the SmartCache is beneficial.
ofcourse, if the system will work without a problem (router vm with 1gbps and usb wlan) and backups I'd rather use that cpu as it is half the cost of the i3-7100. from what I see, the 7100 is ~10% better than the G4560

Greetings DrMrLordX,

as said, I intend to place only the router on the vm with 1 gb of ram and will install openwrt, so I don't think WAN caches is relevant much as the wireless
usage will be minimal and should be handled by openwrt which is designed to run systems less capable than a vm with 2 cpus and 1 gb of ram.

that my 0.02c thought.

You should probably run NAS services and the router services in separate VMs.
