1GB Ram or not

So here is the deal. I just got my new mobo and I took my 2 512 Crucial PC2100 mem chips off the old FIC AD11 and slapped them into my new setup. I have another 1Ghz Athlon sitting around and I was thinking of building another system. I was pondering the thought of using one of my 512 chips in that other system, or I am going to buy one 256MB chip. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone else has 1Gb of ram and if you see any performance differences with it. Also I was wondering which would be the best way to go. I have my taxes back so I am doing the yearly upgrade thing.

Thanx

Seems to me that since you already have the 2 512mb sticks, why not do your own tests. Run a couple of benchmarks and just get a feel for the overall subjective speed when you're running a few apps open at the same time, then take out one of the sticks and see if you notice any difference.

Personally, when I recently upgraded from 256 to 512mb I didn't notice any difference except for that my machine vision project takes about twice as long to kill my PC from the memory leaks I haven't bothered to fix yet :)

Unless you Photoshop, run a database server or do 3D imaging, having 1GB of memory in a desktop machine is more of a bragging device than anything else. I have 512MB because I got it all when DRAM was cheap, but really don't need more than 256MB.

Thanks for the reply I just did some testing and come to find out the system actually runs better with 512 versus 1024. Latency must be a factor there. Anyway it looks like one 512 is going into the other setup. Its probably going to be my LAN game server.

i agree, 1 gig is overlikk... 256 is plenty for me and i run photoshop a lot too (although there are issues when working with extremely high-resolution projects but i think thats a cpu issue).
