1gb RAM in Inspiron 8000?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 with 2x128MB RAM and I'd like to upgrade it to 2x512MB. According to the original Dell specs, there is a max RAM of 512. Has anyone gotten 2x512 to work or won't the memory controller address it? Maybe I'll go to 1x512 while waiting for an answer. Yes, an entirely new laptop purchase is in the line as well.

Thanks.

Not sure about the 8000, I have a C610 with a gig of ram. It's a mobile P3, came with one 256 chip, I purchased two 512 from dell for it. Weird thing is, CPU-Z only sees the first bank full and the second bank empty, but xp sees and uses all 1 gig.

What processor does the 8000 have?

If 512MB is max then you cannot use a single 512MB dimm.

John would be correct. I work with a number of inspirons and the 8000 series can indeed only support up to 512. You need to go to 2X256 to reach this. You can not use a single 512.

My suggestion would be to bank the money towards a new laptop and not worry about upgrading this one. Just my 2 cents though.
