1GB of Ram

For the latest 3D gaming, who here recommends 1GB of ram on a Windows XP Pro system ? For those of you @ 1GB of ram .... how has it changed your preformance in latest games ?

Thanks.

I have noticed no difference from the 512 to the 1gb upgrade. I say put your money into 1 fast 512 chip rather than two slower 512's. That way if you will ever need it it will be cheaper anyways.

so your saying if you get 512mb of really fast ram, it will be the equivalent or even better then 1gb of slower ram?

I've had 1.25GB of memory for so long that I don't really remember what the difference was. It's been about two years now.

I'd go with the gig.

NO! I am simply saying put your money into one uality stick that can be used for overclocking/future upgrades over two sticks that just simply do there purpose. Did you not see my mention of purchasing addtional sticks if needed?

I'm running (2) 256 OCZ PC3200 EL Plat 2.5-3-3-7 @ 220 FSB now And I ordered a 512 stick of the same stuff. So I guess I'll see first hand soon enough.

I noticed when going from 512->1Gig that there was a lot less hitching in games such as UT2k3, BF1942, SimCity 4, etc.. I would imagine it helps with Far Cry, UT2k4, et al. There was also less lag when exiting games and I could even leave more crap open while playing 🙂

I noticed when I went from 512 pc133 to 1024 ddr400... of course I also went from a 1.4 gig athlon to a 3400+ athlon.... Seriously though a gig of ram is what you want right now. I'm guessing if anyone who went from 512-1024 and didn't notice anything and then if they went back to 512 would notice it in the new programs they are using. Hell I've had games that are 4 or 5 years old use over 400 megs of a ram. I wouldn't sacrafice speed for it make sure you got atleast as much speed as your mobo can support.

I just went through this ordeal. All I know is that when I had 512, UT2k4 gave me lots of problems. It would always twitch and lag and get me killed. I upped it to 1 gig and I have no problems whatsoever in the gameplay dept!! (sound is a whole other issue...)

I have Kingston Value RAM btw, so it's not the most expensive stuff but it does the trick!

If you can afford it, go ahead. I'm running 1GB PC2100. At one point and time I thought I had a bad stick of 512 so I ran it just with 512. It bogged my system down. It only bogged when I was burning. I guess it kept accessing the page file and it just kept my HDD searching and searching.

i am in an odd situation and am running w/ 768MB PC2700 ram. 2 different brands nonetheless.

however i havent noticed many problems w/ any games or anything. i have played the farcry demo and full version of UT2k4 and didnt notice any major slowdowns. i suppose UT2k4 may have taken a tad longer to load some levels than some other things i am used to, but i have nothign to compare against. it could easily just be due to the more complex levels than older versions.

however if you are building right now, i would definatly recommend 1 GB of ram for gaming. if you already have the 512 i wouldnt say it is a necessary upgrade just yet (when doom 3 and HL2 get released this may change quickly) however i would say upgrading to 1 GB should be on your agenda in the next 6-12 months for sure.

With games like UT2004, BF1942, Far Cry, and many others 1 GB is necissary. I have 512 and my memory usage ALWAYS goes over that which means I am swapping to the hard disk every once in awhile which makes up some pretty bad lag, in most instances. Since upgradding to my Raptor these glitches aren't SO bad but still VERY noticable. If you are going to game and want any sort of smoothness go for a Gig. It will most likely be the next upgrade for my system.

If you're into new games, 1 Gig of ram helps alot.
I'm already in the game when my friends are still loading
when we're playing BF1942, etc. It makes my games and apps
run "oh so much smoother".

I recommend at least 1 Gig now.

The only thing i really noticed - from 512 to 1GB RAM - is that my level load times shortened considerably. . . . i'm using Win2Kpro so it's a bit less of a memory hog than XP.

now that was worth $90. 😉

1942, desert combat, simcity,ut2004, etc... 1gb has been advantageous for a long while now. in windows i go over 512 routinely, espwhen i leave pc on for days on end. scanning stuff etc.

Concerning BF1942...

I don't see why you'd need 1GB of RAM for this game. I ran this game fairly smoothly with 256MB of RAM, and I upgraded to 512 and I only noticed a little less lag than usual.

Playing Far Cry my system for the fist time in a long while started getting hard drive swapping during gameplay. This happened as well in BF Vietnam. So I began to think maybe an additional 256 or 512 would improve these types of games as well as the upcoming games .. i.e HL2/Doom3

Definitely could tell a difference when going from 512MB to 1GB. No disk swapping at all. Especilly if you do .NET programming or gaming, get a full GB of memory.

I've gone from 384 to 1g before - loading times were at least 10 times faster, but there was no noticeable increase in FPS.
