1GB of RAM - overkill?

Here are the specs for my system -

AMD XP 3000+
512MB PC2700
160GB HDD
9800 Pro

I want to play Far Cry - and Doom 3 / HL2 if and when it is released. Does this have enough HP? Do I need 1GB of DDR?

I would say 1 GB is pretty standard for a high-end machine these days. I'd say a 9800 Pro qualifies your machine as highend, so i don't think it's overkill.

Absolutely. Farcry will definitly benifit from more RAM. I should know, I did right right before getting it. Also, it will prepare you for HL2 and D3 :) RAM is so cheap now.

I have a gig but i bought it at the end of last summer when it was cheap. I figure that I will be glad to have that much eventually but it is definately over kill right now. I think the most i can remember ever using at once was 512.

512 is reaching its limit for most games as is... so 1 gb should give you plenty of breathing room.

<~ has 512, but doesn;t want to buy more cuz he uses RDram :frown:

512MB is the bare minimum I suggest for anyone running XP. 1GB is the norm for me now.

There are only two machines in my house running less than 1GB, and that's an old 440BX based machine that is limited to 512MB, and an old IBM X series laptop limited to 380MB.

I should purchase some more ram. I'm an idiot, I purchased 2x256 Kingston HyperX 3200 when my MB only has 3 slots. I'll probably just get another stick of 512 then save for my next system

I have been using 1GB since March 2003. Absolutely worths it. Sounds crazy, but I am hoping to go 4 GB before Summer is here... damn Graphics apps need too much of it.

I ran 512 MB up until last December when I upgraded to 1 GB. I used to hit the page file on occasion and it was of course very noticable. Now I never have problems. Definitely not overkill.

i don't play any games on my card. I have 512 of RDram now, but do a lot of photoshopping. How will i benefit from another 512mb? The proc is a 1.4 ghz p4 (i think) and vid card is an AIW 8500

Some RAM manufacturers are decreasing production... Looks like a good moment to buy RAM, as the prices might grow.
