1gb enough for win2k?

I'm dedicating 1GB to my win2k partition, is this enough? I'm just going to experiement a few things like using the net, graphics on win2k.

The install itself takes about 800MB (thats just the \WinNT directory.

I would make it about 1.5 GB big.

i would say at the least 2 GB win2k needs a swap file to work with.

Adul... On my 12gb drive, I have my Win2k system (w2k only).

3gb for c:\ (boot)
8gb for d:\ (stuff)
1gb for e:\ (web/ftp server)

I put every program I use on c:\ and made my backup image. With everything installed, and a 256mb swap file, I've only used 1.79 gb of space.

The win2k install will probably take up all your 1GB... You should make it a little bigger to have some extra room (if you can)...

I vote for 3 GB. I don't have anything but the OS, and I'm up to 1.5GB right now. Remember that if you come short it means reinstalling the OS, and having to move some stuff around.

Besides is good to leave some room for defraging.

1.5-2 GB would be a bare minimum. Remember not only do you have to allow for the OS but you also have to allow for the user profiles.

A fresh install of Win2k takes about 800MB alone. I'd say devote 1.5GB MINIMUM to the boot drive.

I have run Win2k server on 1.2 GB, worked fine. Also If you have a large amount of RAM you could move the win2k Swap file to another partition if you realy want to keep it at 1GB.

I had 1 gig my first time around, and that was ok for a bit.

Then I had to move my swap to another drive. No big deal.

However, you're all forgetting about something important -- service packs. If you run out of space on your drive, Windows will not be happy about temp storage for decompressing and installing service packs.

There may be a way to change all the temp locations, but I don't know how to do that yet. I did a 3 gig install and I feel a lot better about it.

I use 2gb. I was on 1 for a while and had my swap on another partition, but even bare minimum apps take up room. I tried 1.5 but that didn't work either. I'm up to 2 now. Everytime I resize I use partition magic. With the older ver of Magic, it would screw up my boot stuff, so I'd have to run the win2k cd and recover, but I wouldn't lose any info. Now Magic supports win2k and it's all good!

ps: well, after running the whole year on this install of wi2k, i'll be reformatting and reinstalling. 6months w/o reinstall is really good compared to win9x which was nearly every month.

Well this just sucks, I have a 1gb partition on this 9gb HD, and I can't make this partition merge with my Win98 partition so that I will have only 1 win98 partition. This sucks!!! I don't know what to do with this 1gb partition now I guess I'll have to Fat32'ize it and have two win98 partitions.

I'll probably install win2k on this whole 9gb HD once I get my new 30gb HD.

AlphaIVT, I installed Win2K Pro into an old machine with just a 1GB hard drive once. I think there was 400MB of free space left after the install, so you should have enough.

1GB can be enough, but just barely. I currently have Win2K installed on a 2GB partition, and I have a little more than 1GB free. Files includes a little under 50MB of misc files that don't have to be there, and a swap file of a little under 200MB. So you should be able to make Win2K fit into 1GB. It'd probably be safer to move the swap file elsewhere.

My C: partition (with Winnt), is 2.43GB, but only 1.1GB is used. This is after at least 6 months of use, and includes my program files directory, but does not include my swap file.

Also I deleted the driver cache.

1GB will suit you fine, especially for temporary.

I previously thought that a 1.2GB partition was a bare minimum for Win2K. However, I just went through and cleaned out the partition, and ended up with slightly less than 650MB for win2k (swap on a separate partition). I never realized how much of junk I had in the winnt folder (junk mostly from various updates, sp1 pkg.).

In a few years, even a .lnk file under M$ win2k will take more than 1GB space to keep.

Kinda on the same topic: What's the min gb that win2k will recognize and suggest fat32? Win2k says 2gb is too small. Will 4 do it? What about booting to dos, will 4gb be too large to be recognized?
