1GB -> 2GB ram upgrade

it user-dependent, if you are just a simple MSN/AIM user, along with web browsing, then do not upgrade since you won't benefit much from te extra gigabyte. However, if you do lots of render (cpu/ram intensive stuff) or play BF2, then you will somehow benefit greatly from the extra ram

Exactly!!

that trips me out... 4 x512 is not as good as 2 x 1 gig. WTF? Latency is better with 4 if you get it at 2. 1 gig modules usually cant hit that latency, unless you pay an arm and a leg for them. 4 x 512 modules is worth it to me. BF2 runs way better with 2 gigs vs 1.

I removed my 2x512 sticks, and replaced them with 2x1GB sticks. 4X512 would not be a good idea for my because I have a Newcastle and it would have knocked the RAM speed down to 333. If you have a Venice/SD cored CPU, I'd say 4x512 is fine.

As for going from 1GB to 2GB, I'd say it was definitley worth it for me. Even with the fact that I purchased a full 2GB, rather than just an extra 1GB.

1 gig is just barely getting by for me now...

I have my ATI TV tuner running

IE running in the background pulling up to date FFL stats

and UT2K4 running on the widescreen.

I have no page file and with the 3 apps running, I'm almost full, therefore, it tells me that I should upgrade to atleast 1.5GB

I'm running a system with 1.25gb of RAM @ DDR333, eliminates bottlesnecks with most games and modern apps. But if you are series about multitasking and memory is insufficient, then do the upgrade.

With 4 DIMMs, most A64 motherboard/CPUs will force you to run at 2T command timings on the RAM, which is about a 5% performance hit over 1T. With the older A64 cores, you may also have to run at DDR333 (which hurts performance even more).

Of course, if this means you're not swapping to disk (when you would be with just 1GB of RAM), it will still speed everything up a *lot*. But it would be slightly better to have 2x1GB than 4x512MB.

I only upgraded to make sure BF2 ran great.... it sucked using 1GB, but 2GB makes it a lot better.

If you do not play BF2 or do crazy intensive stuff, it's not worth it. Anything else I do on my PC is unaffected by the memory upgrade.

Why do you not have page file? That's kinda stupid. Also you should check your peak commit charge to see your memory uage.

because I have enough memory and that I don't want my slowest computer part (my hard drive) to slow me down. It's not stupid, it's common practice. As a matter of fact, going to 1.5GB will be perfect because I will have enough memory to hold me through say in case my anti-virus program kicks in during a game.

If I wasn't playing UT2K4, I have more than enough memory to run quiet a few more programs without taking a hit. I've been running without a page file for 2 years now and so far no problems. People even say photoshop doesn't run well without a page file, but I guess my comp. is an exception because it runs it and dreamweaver well with no page file.

i was contemplating going 2x1Gb and trying to sell my current 2x512 geil sticks................but when another set of 2x512 geil sticks was only £55 i thought screw that!!! im going 4x512 the money saved is way better than keeping 5% performance

First of all, even if you turn off pagefile, virtual memory is still running without your knowledge so your HDD is used no matter what. You can test this yourself with your minimized windows.

Setting pagefile size to 0 would also mean that Windows assigns additional RAM addresses to low priority or even unused programs, which is a waste of RAM and creates artificial RAM shortage.
