1and1 users: Any way to get GD2 support?

Just wondering if there is some way I can enable support for GD2 on my 1and1 webspace? I could install ImageMagick but it takes up a lot of space, so I'll probably stick to GD 1.6.2 if I can't use 2.

It's an open source library that can be used in a number of ways. The latest version of PHP comes with GD2 support built right in, but 1and1 is still using PHP 4.2.3. I guess you get what you pay for ;)

It seems remotely possible to use the PHP dl() directive to load the module at runtime, but a lot of reports say it doesn't work under a lot of multithreaded OSes.

I emailed then about the possibility of at least upgrading to the latest stable PHP - they said they have no current plans on doing so but they would forward my request to the server admins for consideration.

All of you should email them too, maybe they'll get the hint.

Does 1and1 already support GD1.6.2?? Hmmm...maybe I can get my image gallery working again then.

I'm pretty sure if you want GD2, you'll have to install Imagemagick. :brokenheart:

Make a php page that <? echo phpInfo(); ?> and you can see all the configurations that they have. I got an image gallery working with GD1.6.2 but it doesn't like very large jpg's. So it all depends on what you'd like to do.

Yah and ImageMagick without stripping or doing anything special is like 100MB :|

So far I think GD1.6.2 (Included in PHP4.2.3, I think) seems to work ok for me using Coppermine. I won't be uploading anything huge.

I think I will mention it to them. It's kind of weird that they won't upgrade. PHP 4.3.4 has been available since November, so it's not like it's all that new, and the installation is bonehead simple. I imagine one of Europe's largest hosting providers could figure out how to do it with minimal downtime.

I'd really bitch if I was paying for the service, but I'm not, so I'll just grumble here and ask if anyone knows a workaround :D

The biggest problem with GD was it's lack of any decent image resizing algorithm. It made horrible looking thumbnails. That was fixed in GD2, but for a while I was using a resize algorithm that I wrote in perl using GD 1.6. That was kinda fun. If that's all you need to do, you can write a half decent thumbnail creation algorithm yourself. I might stil lhave my per code around.

Rumour has it, that 1and1 is going to update their PHP version during the following 1-2 months... We'll see. Anyways, it's probably more of a compatibility concern than anything else.

No problem. It sure does help with the thumbnail creation quality. I think their free hosting campaign worked, I just signed up for a MS Developer Account as well.

Yep. I'm pretty sure they are hedging on people purchasing accounts and/or add-ons and that after staying in the same place for 3 years, people won't want to move.
