Will I have complete control of my domain purchase (i.e. the ability to change nameservers) or should I just go ahead and pay the extra $3 for godaddy?
 
i registered with namecheap.com, for 9 bucks, they give yuo full control.
i dont' knwo about 1&1, although i am using them to host my files.
 
Who knows if they take your domain away from you.

I don't think they are an ICANN accredited domain registrar, however GoDaddy.com is.

Save yourself possible future headache, go through GoDaddy.com

Definately stay with Godaddy. I am doing similar. Have used them for years. Great company!
