1and1.com web hosting

Saw a huge 16-page add for these guys, and it got me interested.

Their site and offerings look very nice, and their pricing seems crazy cheap.

Am I missing something??

I used them when they had a free promo. It was ok I supose but they gave me a hell of a time when I wanted to transfer all my domians to another host...

What kind of problems did they give you?

Do you mean they gave you a hard time cancelling your account with them, or something else with the move?

I used them when I was running an Unreal Tournament server. That wasn't just web hosting though. It was a full server with remote desktop running on it. Made setting things up and managing the server very easy. Got to be too expensive though. That and our game clan was a bunch of immature high school kids.

Yea they kept locking the domain out and not letting it transfer. I had to call about 10x and speak to 6 different managers.

I did their free 3 year plan, got sick of their constant emails, tried to delete my account, couldn't, had to fax in the delete account form. Pain in the ass.

They seemed like a good company other than that though.

they r decent

I have that also, no problem here, also their support has been good, they answer all my questions.

I still have the free promo with them and also another Host. I would consider someone else though, I think their prices are little high.

This is why you NEVER register a domain with a host. Register using GoDaddy or something so that you always have control of your domain names and they can't do anything about it.

I have 1and1 and my 3 free years are not up yet. I have had no problems. I don't know what that other guy is talking about with thier "constant" emails because I don't get any....maybe it's because I used my spam account to sign up for them...so I dunno.

Uptime has been excellent. I've never had anyone say that it was down and it has never been down for me. Not high use out of it though but it will be in the near future used more.

I refuse to buy from them simply because they advertise SO EFFING MUCH.

Sure, they have the right to, but then I also have the right to not buy from them.

I haven't seen them advertise much. The way I found out about them was here on OT.

their control panel is the suck

You got that right...but there isn't much that needs to be setup.

I just setup email and FTP access..that's all I need. The site that is on it doens't require any SQL or anything like that. It's all HTML/JavaScript based stuff.

ive had the 3 year trial... think it expires this november? i plan on switching hosts. site is slow sometimes, they fubared my mysql db once... you get what you pay for i guess.

I use them to host a few commercial sites. Their reliability is great and the control panel makes administration really easy. Sure you can get cheaper hosts run by a 5 man show for a personal site but if you're doing anything requiring solid uptime and better datacenter management, go with the big guys. I have accounts with Sonataweb and Telnap as well. Can't say too many good things about Sonata's reliability but Telnap has been good.
