I have a pretty basic website and my main email account with 1and1.com. I've never had any problems with 1and1.com, now I'm debating if I should stay with them or not.

What do you guys think? I'm debating actually paying the 5/month for their 1&1 Home package.

If you like 1&1, that's fine, otherwise the general recommendation is to avoid them at all costs. Go to webhostingtalk.com and do a quick search, you'll find more reasons than you need.

mine is coming up for renewal, too. I've never had an issue, but I mainly use them as a file server.

I did read a thread here on ATOT that they own your domain. If you leave them, they'll continue re registering your domain name. Is that true?

<- never read the EULA :(

as i expected, searching on webhostingtalk didnt yield many valid complaints. several people complained about billing problems, but most of them were dealing with the non-US company and their reasons were pretty stupid at that.

Like what reasons? I have been using them for 3 years now and have NEVER had a problem. I have never seen my webpage down either.

They can't register my domain. I own it and registered it myself. They have no control over it whatsoever.

Now if you registered it with 1and1 through them, then well you could be SOL.

I can confirm that they do not own your domain. I jumped on that bandwagon 3 years ago as well, and a few weeks ago I decided to switch the domain name to namecheap.com (at the urging of ATOT). It was painless.

I did keep them as my host though. At least for a few more months. It's super cheap. $2.50 a month.

Wise decision

Just remember to update your NameCheap.com profile with an email address you check frequently.

Ross,

I still have not made a decision. You have something that might help me out?

but don't expect them to give you an answer on which you should choose. if you do ask, they tell you to just search the site. the site is worthless because no one will recommend anything. its just a huge site of people bitching about the different hosts. if you go by that site, no host is a good host.

Yes, I've noticed that it seems like everyone has a problem with everyone. There is no 100% satisfaction that I've seen.

Yeah it's always something with some people.

I started paying for 1&1 and since then the service hasn't changed or anything. It's still the same reliable hosting that I've always experienced with them. Now...I don't like their control panel as much as others, but it's okay. And I don't like the random username crap you get assigned when creating email boxes, but since I only use one it doesn't bother me.

I just went through it and down graded to the Instant Domain package. I transferred most of my domains from them to godaddy last year when I thought this package expired. I currently use Moreweb for hosting.
