Crazy story.. Poor whale though, why are they still being hunted?

Because people are idiots.

Because we make exceptions to native Americans who still rely on whaling as a food source.

Oh, I guess it's okay then. Sorry we hunted your species to extinction, it was for a good cause though, you kept tradition alive for a few native Americans for a few years.

There are quotas in place that are reviewed regularly for them and the populations are monitored. I have no problem with it since those people were hunting whales hundreds of years prior to European colonialism.

Well I don't think its the few Native Americans as you mentioned that are the major problems (don't get me wrong 1 dead is 1 more dead). Its Japan, Norway etc as previously mentioned that need to freaking step out of 1812 and realize what they are doing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowhead_Whale

" Alaska Natives continue to kill small numbers of bowhead whales in subsistence hunts each year. This level of killing (25?40 animals annually) is not expected to affect the population's recovery."

Doesn't sound all that terrible to me. Not like they're trophy hunting.

It's coming right for us!

Whaling has always been a prominent source of food for Alaskans, and is monitored by the International Whaling Commission. A hunting quota for the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission was recently renewed, allowing 255 whales to be harvested by 10 Alaskan villages over five years.

After it is analyzed, the fragment will be displayed at the Inupiat Heritage Center in Barrow, Alaska.

Yeah, I agree. It kind of irritates me because it's not like there's a shortage of food in this country and they NEED to hunt whales. Still, taking a few animals a year for this purpose probably doesn't have much effect on the overall population of whales. Edit-I'm not opposed to hunting either. I think it is a necessary part of responsible wildlife management. Whales don't need to be hunted though.

I've seen the stats on the number of whales killed every year in the name of "science" by the Japanese and it is appalling.

good read.
I especially like this one:
"'*' 2005 was the first year in which Japan added the endangered Fin Whale to its list of whales to kill under the JARPA research program. Commencing in 2007, Japan plans to increase the number of captured fin whales to 50, and also kill up to 50 of the vulnerable Humpback Whale."
