The car has been re-painted a different color, and I hope it's an OEM color (was black before, now red). However, I can't be sure, and I can't ask the person who previously owned the car. What's the best way to find out the exact shade of red?

EDIT: I'm trying to get the right touch-up paint.

The paint job is actually holding up pretty darned well.

Oh, so you own it already? I would still be worried if they painted OVER the black, without striping it down first...

Why would you strip down a perfectly good base to put your new paint over? Factory paint just needs to be scuffed and then it's a perfect base to ensure adhesion. As long as you prep your parts correctly, you'll have no chipping.

Go to a body shop that have a paint spectrometer and ask them to make some paint for you.
I wanted to try out the Dr Color Chip system, though.

Dr Color Chip is OK. I tried it on my MR2. Doesn't really fill in the chips like the pictures suggest, it just colors them to match your paint so their not as noticable. Tried it on a 350z too, same thing...

I did like 3-4 on one chip and it didn't work like the pictures. Trust me, I sat there for a long ass time waiting for it to dry so i could apply another layer.

I used to do bodywork and paint for a living. Best way to fix a chip is to sand it down, primer, base, clear. 🙂
