EDIT: Problem solved. Found a reputable shop and got it fixed for 160 bucks, labor included. Drop resistor was the issue. Replaced and working fine. Thanks for your help!

I've got a 1998 Nissan Altima with an auto transmission. Yesterday it was working perfectly fine. No lights on the dash and running smooth. I drove up to a gas station, turned the car off, filled up and when I turned the car back on the "service engine soon" light was lit up and did not go out. I thought it was a little weird and that I'd need to take it to a shop soon. I started to pull away and it shifted hard and made a thump noise between 1st and 2nd gear. When I start the car now the "o/d off" light flashes 16 times.

I'm boned.

What do you guys think this is? This is probably the death of my Altima 🙁

Did cars in that era use vacuum to sense the need for an upshift?
I know old cars will shift hard if the vacuum line to the transmission is busted.
