If you know the guy, and you know he's babied it.. with only 30k miles, go for it. ;)

Yep and 9.5k is an excellent price. Make sure to have a trusted mechanic check it out and run a CarFax on it (just in case).

How close of a friend is he? If you buy it and the engine falls out next week are you going to blame him for it? Generally buying from friends or family is a bad idea. The car itself sounds like a deal but if you value the friendship you might want to pass. If you're not that close anyway, go for it.

1. Great car.. I'm an accord owner too.

2. I would check the tranny first. ie when shift in reverse or N or to D, does it have a bump ? There are a lot of accord failed tranny.
Out of 3, My 2 friends and I, all from different dealer, in June, July, August of 1999. 2 Have died and mine is still alive. 2 died were cover under extended warranty. There are quite a few bad honda/acura tranny.

3. If you do buy it, change your tranny fluid often.. ie every 15k with Honda ATF only, I'm on the 10k schedule. I seen people using Mobile 1 Sync ATF and tranny became jerky

4. Mobile 1 oil if you can afford it.

5. www.accordv6.com if you need help to "rice it up" or my www.cyforce.net under "the garage" and you'll see the link to the 1999 accord

I'm not too sure that's an indication of a bad tranny in a Honda. Hondas historically have very firm-shifting transmissions, so a bit of a jerk isn't at all abnormal. The automatic in my 1988 Accord slammed into every gear (far less-smoothly than most manuals I've ridden in/driven) and it lasted for 205,000 miles.

No, the 98-2002 series has bad tranny identify with the bump going from Park to reverse or neutral to Drive. Its not the same as the old transmission that you described it. Honda/Acura knows and admits the defect but will not recall tranny as of yet. We're trying to petition the NHTSB to force honda to recall and repair out of warranty tranny just like the firestone tire fiasco. Changing fluid will not help. Just so you know, 2000/2001 Accord has 7Year/100K transmission warranty not the usual 3/36k. If yours go out, you can get it fix for free, if your dealer won't, Honda America will. This only affect 98-2002 Honda/Acura 4 speed transmission which is pretty much all current Accords. Not the 2003 which as the 5 speed tranny.

the one in my 91 civic kinda does that too... first gear is nuts, it lasts about 1 1/2 seconds and it throws you back in your seat. then you get thrown into the next gear. and you can really feel the 2-1 downshift at lights.
