Hah, the new Civic got it's ass handed to it.

Stupidly, a 4g Civic Si would have been around the same performance, and defintitely better on handling than the new Si. Lower weight + double wishbones = win.

New cars have many advantages, NVH, comforts, safety, etc continually improve, but as is quite often the case now, something is lost with the movement towards more and more weight and cheapening up on things like suspension. Take the Focus for example, we in the US get a 140hp ~2600lb 2.0 DOHC i4 car for quite cheap, while some whine that we are taking so long to get the newer Euro generation, but those people utterly ignore the fact that the only faster Foci of the new gen are the Turbo ST and RS models, with the rest of the line bogging down with small motors under the 3000lb+ weight of the new model. If you come to me and ask whether I'd rather have 140hp at 2600lbs, or 140hp at 3000lbs, I'll take the lighter one each and every time, even if the new one looks considerably better.

I wonder how it would hold up against a RSX type S?

i do not have firsthand experience but i remember the comparisons at the time said they were basically equivalent in performance but of course the SI was a better deal costing a couple thousand less

that is no surprise given their chassis/suspension layout almost the same and their engines are the same family and very similar spec.

IIRC, the RSX-S was 95% of the performance (basically identical straight-line, but not as nimble due to signficant extra weight) in a more sedate and comfortable package. The biggest complaint was the lack of character in comparison to the Integra Type-R's race-ready presense. The Type R made a crazy noise, and it seemed to be purpose built for flinging around. The RSX-S was a lot more comfort/lux/soft feeling in comparison, and the much improved sound dampening inside gave a lot more detachment from the action.

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/05q1/2005_acura_rsx_type-s-short_take_road_test

Type R:
0-60: 6.8
1/4 mile: 14.9
Skidpad: .92g
60-0 braking: 110ft

2005 RSX-S:
0-60: 6.2
1/4 mile: 14.9
Skidpad: .86g
60-0 braking: 145ft (for a 2002; the 05 is supposed to be better), but the C&D test is 70-0

skidpad on acuras is always bad because the stock tires are horrible michilen all season.

the current SI at least has an option for sport summer tires. so i bet the RSX-S would do better with different tires than stock.

Great article. It's pretty damn rare to see an unmodified Integra of any sorts, let alone a Type R with only 5400 miles!
A friend of mine had one back in high school and it was a blast. Myself I drove an LS sedan at one point and even that was pretty fun.

The reason the Lotus Elise is such a great driver's car is the same reason they liked the Type R. It is lightweight with very few compromises.

Are you incapable of going a day without posting about the Elise?

Besides, the Elise has a msrp 2x the original msrp of the Type R. The Type R was much more obtainable.

You can easily buy a low mileage Elise for $30k.

Toyota MR-2. But it's an irrelevant comparison because the MR-2 is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive layout, while both the Integra Type R and RSX Type S are front-engined, front wheel drive. Completely different driving characteristics.

Seriously... can we have a thread about performance cars without you sucking Colin Chapman's dick. If you want one so bad, go buy one. Seriously, you said it yourself, they're only $30k, go buy one.

I mean, $30k for a car that is so light that it defies gravity and floats around the track instead of driving on the ground like lesser cars. A car so focused on performance there is a metal dildo built into the drivers seat that goes in the driver's ass to hold him still during cornering, trading comfort for pure driving bliss. A car which is so incredible, it pissed in mb's corn flakes this morning just because he doubted it and refused to bring it up in a thread unrelated to it.

Yeah, hell of a bargain man. Buy one.
