1996 Nissan Maxima GLE... SKOORB?

I hit all the dealerships yesterday in my search for a car... i went to a smaller dealership here in VT mhauto
and they had a loaded 96 maxima for sale. It had 82,000 miles on it, but no price. I did some research from edmunds and cars.com and found they should sell for about 7 grand. I am about to go there and find out what they are asking. I also have a 500 dollar off coupon and my dad knows these guys so i am hoping for a good deal. I plan on putting 2K down and possibly trading in my jetta also. The cool thing is that they have a buy-here, pay- here program where i just have to pay 50 bucks a week until the car is paid off, with no interest.

Words can't discribe how nice this car looked black, leather, wood trim, power moonroof.. so nice 🙂. Any ideas of what they will say the price is?... wish me luck guys 🙂

what condition is the leather in? leather goes bad pretty quickly if they leave the moonroof open.

i only got to look at the car for a second, but it looked pretty damn good. I might try and to do a test drive later today, but i have to work at 5 🙁.

I've heard there are lots of good deals on Maximas since a lot of their owners are selling them in favor of new Altimas.

If I were you, I'd look up the price at kellybluebook.com

For some reason, that looks like really low mileage on the Maxima. No worries though since there are a lot of Maximas of that vintage running 200k+ miles withouht any problems.

Well thats good to hear. My POS jetta has 144K on it and its must go. I thought 82K was semi-high for a 96, but i figured i can get a lot of miles out of this car no problem.

take it to your guy and have him put it on a jack and figure out if theres anything wrong with it

NADA says $8400 trade-in value and $10k retail so your price could be anywhere in that range depending on your area.

You should be able to pay very little with your Jetta trade-in for it. Prolly one year of payments could make it yours. There's a reason why Skoorb and others love this car so much.

I like that gen of Maxima the best... 😀

Yeah the engine is quite durable. There's someone in my area with a 95 Maxima SE 5-spd that has around 300k km on it and he recently added a nitrous kit (75-shot I think) and the engine is still running fine.

btw I have a 99 GLE.

Yep thats what KBB told me... oh well, i was hoping for 7-8 thousand. My dad works at Toyota, but they really don't have anything that interests me right now. He knows these guys at this dealership and said they should be able to work out a deal. My jetta is only worth about 1,000 dollars or so, so with trade, i am looking to put about 3thousand into the car, then pay the rest off over the summer.

It doesnt look that low.
7 years -> average 12kmiles/year-> 84kmiles.
My 97 has about 65kmiles on it. So i guess it is average.

btw
you should be able to get it for about 7.5k maximum
If you end up paying more, your are not getting a good deal.

If its an auto, make sure the tranmission is ok- that is something that might be a problem at ~100kmiles, the engine is a no worries thing...

great, thats what i want to hear... i figured 7-7.5K minus 500, minus 2000 down minus 1000 trade sounds really good to me. My dad said he could probaly get the buy here pay here program where i will just have to pay 50 bucks a week until the car is paided off. I do not have any credit, good or bad right now, so it will be tricky to get a loan.

A few words of advice:

1) Coupons at an auto dealership is for suckers. I'd be willing to bet that I could get the car for a better price without using the coupon vs. you dealing and using the coupon. Does the coupon state anything like "must be presented at beginning of negotiation?" If so, then they'll use the coupon in the negotiation process ... and it may work against you. Either way, the $500 coupon isn't a "free" coupon. 😉

2) "Buy here, pay here" - Be careful. Usually these programs have much higher interest rates because programs of this nature of directed towards people who have poor credit.

3) How much is the "private party" value of your Jetta? They will, at best give you the wholesale value for the vehicle. If they would give you $1K for your car as a trade-in, then you could probably sell it for $2K - depending on the private party price.

Best of luck. It sounds like a great car that will provide you with several more years of service.

Oh, from their Web site:
M & H Auto Burlington's largest Used Car Dealer is happy to offer our customers with less than perfect credit an opportunity to own a used vehicle.
Here is how it works: Select any vehicle on our lot priced under $3000.00 give us 1/2 down and pay off the rest at $50.00 a week.
NO CREDIT CHECK!!
-- I smell trouble with this payment plan. If you wanted to finance $2K, the interest might kick you hard with this option. You might just consider a personal loan from a credit union or your local bank. The rates should be much, much better.

Alright i checked out the car this afternoon... its is VERY nice.

I asked him what it was going for and he said about 9500! He asked how much i was asking to get out of my trade and I said about a grand. He claims that the KBB for the car is 11,000 which is way off according to both cars.com and edmunds. He offered the car to me for 8700 with trade and a year warranty 🙁. I am going to have my dad call on monday and talk it over... if we could get the car into the 7500-8000 range, i would be all over it.

GLE's come with auto standard, no manual option.

Not to barge in on you thread, but is KBB down or something, I haven't been able to access thier site for several days?

I asked him and he said it was fine... of course i am going to have a real mechanic check everything out

I'm sure that's a nice car and although historically people supposedly drive 12k miles/year in reality I think that that seems to have low miles. The price could be better but if it's in really really nice condition (good leather for instance - which is hard to keep in good condition over time) then it might be worth doing. Make sure you get a nissan mechanic to check it out first. They'll charge you about an hour labor and do a full check list on various parts of it. And of course run a VIN check.

Private party for your jetta you'll undoubtedly do better than what they'll give you. Trade ins are only worth doing if you are in a rush or just hate selling cars 😉

When I bought my maxima last november the same dealer, for $9999 was selling a '99 SE with about 80k miles on it. It was a 5 speed and didn't have any options. The paint was not in the best shape, but for $10k it was a 99 and you're looking to pay almost as much for something 3 years older (although your one does have some extra options). Granted, I thought this SE was a very good price.

If that GLE is in very sweet condition it could still be worth considering, but I'd urge you against the trade in on the jetta. Just do a private party!

Yeah me too. According to cars.com, the car in good shape is 7700. I have no idea where this 11,000 dollar price came from. He gave me a sheet with the VIN and it says KBB, 11,000, our price - 9,995. I bet i can get him to like 7500... he thinks he can get more because its a somewhat rare car around here. My dad ( the GRAND NARGUS himself) will pull at AT HD worthy deal though. 🙂
