A person at work is selling this vehicle. I don't know much about it yet and I'll update the thread as I get more info. The one main problem they say it has is that it needs a new transmission as it gets stuck in 3rd gear and just stays there. They're selling it for $900.

I'm wondering how much of an investment will it take for this to actually be a worthwhile vehicle? With winter coming up soon, would it be smart to get this vehicle then have a shop do some work on it? I'm not very capable/knowledgable, but I know a few people in my area who are good with repairs. Also, could it being stuck in 3rd gear like that mess with anything else under the hood?

Like I said, I'll update when I get more info about the car. I don't know mileage. I don't know if there's anything else wrong with it. I'll update soon!

Thanks!

If it's the trans control module, it's about $200 at Rock Auto.

What happens if they have to rebuild the actual transmission or replace it completely? I wish I knew more info about it so you guys could help me out more!

Search for remanufactured 42re/44re transmissions

The V8 will have the 44re and the I6 the 42re.

Probably $1k to $1.5K.

But it might be a simple fix.

If it only has part time 4WD, don't buy it. That's not good for snow, unless you're literally driving on top of a snowpack. It's especially not good for ice. You need a vehicle with a fulltime 4WD mode or AWD.

Probably smarter to get a set of steel rims and snow tires for whatever you are driving now.

A $900 15 year old vehicle with a bad trans, and you are not that knowledgeable, it's not for you, pass.
